David Duchovny Talks Calling Out Plot Holes in 'The X-Files'

David Duchovny is revealing how he handled character inconsistencies while filming The X-Files.
The 64-year-old actor played the role of FBI agent Fox Mulder on the 90s supernatural drama. According to David, having directors that didn’t fully understand the character was his main “pet peeve” while working on the show.
During the Tuesday (July 8) episode of David‘s Fail Better podcast, he talked about correcting plot holes on the show.

Actress Emily Deschanel was a guest on the podcast episode. During the episode, David talked about how The X-Files compares to Emily‘s show Bones in that both shows have a high amount of drama per episode.
“Sometimes the directors would come on and they’d know they had a great script and [since] this was on The X-Files, this could happen, you know? Like, ‘Holy s—, this is a great script,’ and they really wanted to kill it. Those guys were dangerous,” David said during the podcast episode.
He went on to say that the directors were often unfamiliar with past episodes and said, “So often they would say, ‘We’ve never seen Mulder like this before,’ and I’d say, ‘Yeah, like 10 other times we’ve seen Mulder like this before.’”
The directors’ unfamiliarity with the characters would often come with inconsistencies that David revealed he once had to call out directly to the director.
“I remember like in the middle of the episode, I had this thought. I I think I went up to [director] Chris Carter — who wrote that episode I believe — and I said, ‘Didn’t Mulder and Scully watch a building burn down in the pilot? I think Mulder was fairly cool with it, you know, it didn’t bother him,” David shared, referring to a season 1 episode of the series that focused on his character’s fear of fire.
