How to Train Your Dragon is taking the franchise to new heights.

The movie earned $83 million in its first weekend of release at the box office, surpassing expectations, per Variety.

The live-action remake of the 2010 original animated adventure was originally projected to bring in $70 million to $80 million. It brought in another $114 million at the international box office for a major debut haul of $197.8 million.

The movie cost $150 million to produce and roughly $100 million to market.

The $1.6 billion franchise is set on the mythical viking village of Berk, and follows the adventures of a scrawny misfit teen named Hiccup, who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless.

The movie currently commands a 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 98% audience score.
