According to Matthew, he spoke to Barbara Broccoli, the producer of 2006′s Casino Royale ahead of its release. Unfortunately, he shared on the podcast that their conversation didn’t land him an audition for the role.
“I didn’t audition. I went in and met Barbara. I didn’t get to the audition, but it was quite a funny one because — and she’s gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person,” Matthew shared on the podcast. He went on to reveal the conversation he had about the role that he said lost him a chance to audition for the movie.
“She was like, ‘So what’s your idea for Bond?’ And I was like, ‘My idea for Bond, we’ve gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He’s in deep pain. He’s brilliant at killing people,’” Matthew recalled during the episode.
Matthew went on to say that he felt like his take on the character was too dark and not what the producer was looking for.
He continued and said, “I think by the end of the interview, she was like, ‘Mhmm. Next.’ Because I wanted to make it really dark… but what I should have said was, ‘But also incredibly charming.’”
The role ultimately went to Daniel Craig while Matthew went on to appear in Downton Abbey instead.
