Nezza Explains Why She Sang National Anthem in Spanish at Dodgers Game, Says She Has No Regrets

Nezza is opening up about her viral performance of the National Anthem at the Los Angeles Dodgers game.

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter, who is of Colombian-Dominican descent, performed the National Anthem in Spanish despite being told she wasn’t allowed to do so.

Nezza performed on No Kings Day and changed the performance from English to Spanish out of solidarity with the immigrant families who have been targeted by recent ICE raids in L.A.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday (June 23), Nezza explained her decision and said she has no regrets.

“Look at everything that’s been happening. When I originally got booked for it, the state of L.A. was very different … and as we got closer to the date, I was like, ‘I feel like I have to do something,’” Nezza said, adding that she felt “like this would be a really just beautiful gesture out of love.”

Nezza said she originally asked to perform the song in both English and Spanish and she was told she has 90 seconds for her performance, so she thought that meant she had 90 seconds to perform it however she wants.

“I went in there with a smile on my face … I thought it was going to be this fun, beautiful day getting to do this for my Latino community. And as obviously everyone knows at this point, this isn’t what happened,” she said.

Nezza said that she was uninvited from ever returning to Dodgers Stadium, but the team said she’s welcome back.

“I’ve never broken a rule in my life. I can’t even cut in line! So if teenage me saw that video of what I did, I think she would pass out from anxiety,” Nezza said. “I still have no words for what came over me, but I’m so happy that I did it.”
