Investigation Ongoing After Rob Reiner and Wife Found Dead

The world of Hollywood was shocked over the weekend after the news that legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their home on Sunday. The couple's son, Nick Reiner, is now being held on suspicion of murder, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Here is the latest information on this developing story.

Reiner's Son Booked on Suspicion of Murder After Couple Found Dead in Home

Reiner and his wife were reportedly found dead in their Brentwood home by their daughter Romy. The first calls to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) came in at about 3:30 pm on Sunday, December 14. First responders arrived at the home to find a male and a female dead on the scene.

According to LAPD Chief Jim MdDonnell, Nick Reiner is being held on $4 million bail. Nick had been vocal over the years about his struggle with drug addiction, a problem that led to him being homeless at one point in his life. He had also previously detailed his mental health challenges.

Rumors began to circulate quickly after the first calls came in, speculating that another family member was involved. LAPD did not specifically confirm the Reiners as the deceased during a press conference held late Sunday. LAPD only said that they were seeking a search warrant for the family home. Local officials noted that they were not looking at any particular suspects during the Sunday press conference, instead saying that the investigation would continue through the night.

It was not until Monday that the LAPD confirmed that they were holding the couple's son on suspicion of murder. As of late Monday morning, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has not confirmed the criminal charges in the deaths of Rob and Michele.

Law enforcement officials recently removed the police tape that had been installed near the Reiner home. LAPD confirmed that they were reopening the street in the exclusive Brentwood neighborhood. The home cannot be seen from street level and is enclosed by a solid white fence.

Reaction to the News of the Tragedy

News of the tragedy prompted an outpouring of support for the family from dozens of actors, producers, and politicians. Tributes repeatedly praised the couple for their immense contributions to Hollywood over the years. The tributes also touched on the Reiners’ commitment to causes such as marriage equality. Politicians who have offered their condolences include former President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Los Angeles Dodgers expressed their sorrow about the passing of Rob, known in the city as one of the team's biggest fans. Major League Baseball (MLB) also praised Rob, remembering him as an "avid baseball fan."

President Donald Trump also commented on the news, ruffling feathers on both sides of the political aisle with his comments. In a post on Truth Social on Monday morning, Trump suggested that the murder was the result of what he called "Trump derangement syndrome," saying that the couple was obsessed with him.

Colleagues of the president took to social media to criticize the comments. For example, GOP Rep. Thomas Massie said that the president's post was "inappropriate and disrespectful." He went on to challenge his Republican colleagues, Vice President JD Vance, and the White House to defend the president's remarks.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also said that Trump was out of line with his comments. Once one of Trump's most stalwart supporters, Greene has become increasingly critical of the president.

The Reiners were distinguished as one of Hollywood's elite couples. Rob wore various hats in the industry, including director, producer, and actor. He rose to fame for his role as Mike on the Norman Lear sitcom "All in the Family." Rob then went on to try his hand at directing, leading well-loved films such as "This Is Spinal Tap" (1984), "Stand by Me" (1986), "The Princess Bride" (1987), "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), and "A Few Good Men" (1992).

Rob and Michele met on the set of "When Harry Met Sally." The two married in 1989, later adding three children to their family.

In addition to their careers in Hollywood, the couple was also dedicated to the cause of marriage equality. The pair helped launch the American Foundation for Equal Rights, a group that fought against a proposed ban on same-sex marriage in California. The Reiners were also passionate about early childhood development.
