William “Bill” Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, Delaware police announced Monday.

Stevenson, 77, was indicted Feb. 2 on one count of first-degree murder for the alleged killing of his wife at their home in Elsmere, according to the New Castle County Police Department. He was arrested following what authorities described as an extensive investigation that lasted several weeks.

Police responded to a domestic dispute call at the residence on Dec. 28. Upon arrival, officers found Linda Stevenson, 64, unresponsive on the living room floor. Life-saving measures were attempted, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cause of Death Pending Autopsy

Authorities have not released the cause or manner of Linda Stevenson’s death. Police said an autopsy is being conducted by the appropriate medical examiner to determine how she died.

According to police, the investigation continued after the initial response as detectives reviewed evidence and interviewed witnesses. Officials did not disclose what led them to seek the murder charge or whether additional evidence was uncovered during the investigation.

“This was the result of an extensive weeks-long investigation,” police said in a statement announcing the arrest.

Bail Set at $500,000

Following his arraignment, Stevenson was ordered held on $500,000 bail. Police said he remains in custody at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after being unable to post bail.

It was not immediately known whether Stevenson has retained a criminal defense attorney. Authorities have not announced a court date beyond the arraignment proceedings.

Victim Remembered by Family

Linda Stevenson was survived by her daughter with Stevenson, Christina Vettori, her granddaughter, and her sister, according to her obituary. She was described as a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Family members have not publicly commented on the charges.

Stevenson’s Past and Connection to Jill Biden

William Stevenson was previously married to Jill Biden, now 74, from 1970 to 1975. The two married when Jill Biden was 18 years old. Stevenson, a former college football player, was 23 at the time.

During their marriage, Stevenson opened The Stone Balloon, a popular music venue near the University of Delaware that hosted performances by artists including Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and the Allman Brothers Band. Jill Biden unsuccessfully attempted to retain her ownership stake in the bar following their divorce. The venue closed in 2024.

Two years after the divorce, Jill Biden married then-Senator Joe Biden in 1977. Stevenson has publicly claimed that Jill Biden and Joe Biden had an affair prior to the end of their marriage, an allegation the Bidens have denied. Joe and Jill Biden have said they first met after being set up on a date in 1975, following Joe Biden’s first wife and daughter being killed in a car crash in 1972.

A representative for Jill and Joe Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Case Remains Active

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and declined to release additional details. No further charges have been announced, and authorities have not said whether additional arrests are expected.
