A representative for Richie has confirmed that the highly decorated musical artist recently underwent a heart procedure for atrial fibrillation, forcing the cancellation of three upcoming performances. The 77-year-old was hospitalized last week for heart issues that continue to plague his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

Richie's spokesperson told PEOPLE magazine that “Lionel underwent a common procedure for atrial fibrillation (AFib)." The statement went on to say that “The doctor said everything went perfectly" and that “Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”

Three previously scheduled concerts have been cancelled due to the hospitalization. These shows include events on September 26 in San Francisco, September 30 in Chicago, and October 2 in Columbus, Ohio.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, atrial fibrillation is “an irregular heart rhythm that begins in your heart’s upper chambers." The typical treatment for this condition is called an ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that generates scars designed to stop the electrical impulses that lead to the irregular heart rhythms. An ablation also helps to lower the threat of stroke.

TMZ first reported that Richie had undergone the procedure. It was reported last month that the "American Idol" judge checked himself into a hospital for observation out of an abundance of caution after a show in St. Louis on August 29. Richie was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in order to undergo cardiac tests.

PEOPLE reported on September 2 that Richie had been released from the hospital and was reportedly "doing great" after returning to his home in Los Angeles. Just last weekend, Richie went to a dinner party at Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills, California, with his girlfriend, Lisa Parigi. The pair was seen smiling for photos outside of the restaurant.

Richie Has Been Dealing with Heart Health Concerns for Months

Richie's ablation procedure came after weeks of ongoing health issues. The singer had to cut a performance short in June when he began to feel dizzy on stage. He was forced to postpone two concerts so that he could rest.

He returned to the tour on June 30, acknowledging his health concerns and joking with the crowd about how worried his fans have been. During the show at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Richie told the crowd that  “You have no idea what I have been through in the last 24 hours, listening to my friends tell me their advice on what I should be doing.”

Richie posted on Instagram in July, thanking his fans for all of the support, saying,  “Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you.”

Looking ahead, Richie is scheduled to start a Las Vegas residency in October. Several shows are on deck at the Encore Theater at the Wynn. He is also scheduled to perform at various venues in South America early next year.
