President Trump Celebrates 100 Days in Office with Rally in Michigan
The Trump administration marked its first 100 days in office this term on Tuesday. Here is a look at what has been dominating the political headlines in the U.S. over the last few days.
Trump Marks 100 Days in Office at Rally in Michigan
U.S. President Donald Trump marked the first 100 days of his second term on Tuesday, speaking at a rally in Warren, Michigan. The choice of the rally site in a part of the country known for being home to the auto industry was symbolic following an executive order signed by the president prior to departing the White House earlier in the day. The latest order details that the government will provide reimbursements to automobile producers in the U.S. who need to import parts. The imported parts will have a 25% tariff placed on them starting this Saturday.
Speaking to supporters in Michigan, Trump touted the success of his immigration policy. The remarks came one day after the White House placed dozens of yard signs on the South Lawn featuring pictures of migrants that the administration claims are in the country illegally. The displays have been placed strategically behind the media streaming area for maximum exposure.
President Trump Places Call to Bezos About Amazon Tariff Inclusion
It was a tense morning on Tuesday in the White House after Punchbowl Social published a story detailing that Amazon was planning to display the additional cost of some products due to Trump's tariffs. Trump called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express his displeasure about the idea. Shortly after the call, Trump told the media gathered on the White House lawn that it was a productive phone call.
Meanwhile, Amazon said that they were never planning to include the details about how tariffs are impacting the costs of specific goods. The controversy comes as businesses decide how they are going to pass along the cost of the tariffs to consumers. Imports from China are taking the biggest hit with a 145% tariff.
Latest Polls Paint Dire Results for Trump
A new round of polling was released just ahead of the 100-day mark of the Trump presidency, painting dire results for the president. The ongoing tariff carousel and low-performing domestic economy are bringing down the president's approval ratings to the lowest levels of any new leader at this point in the presidency, dating back to Dwight Eisenhower.
Trump's overall approval rating is sitting at 41%, down four points since March and seven points lower than where it stood at the end of February. Just 22% of those polled conveyed that they strongly approved of the job that the president was doing. Conversely, about 45% of those polled said that they strongly disapproved of Trump's performance thus far.
While Trump's ratings are down largely across the board, he is taking the biggest hit lately in the female and Hispanic American demographics. Although the president and his team continue to hang their hat on the job that they were doing with immigration, those polled are most concerned about the economy.
Over 100 Migrants Detained at Colorado Nightclub
Federal agents representing a number of agencies detained over 100 migrants early Sunday during a raid at a nightclub in Colorado Springs. The raid was led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in partnership with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and local law enforcement authorities.
According to the DEA Rocky Mountain field division, the agents announced that they were entering before going inside the nightclub. The DEA also confirmed that they seized several guns during the event. The migrants who were detained are accused of being in the country illegally.
Wisconsin Judge Arrested for Obstructing Immigration Officers
Controversy is swirling around the FBI after the agency arrested a Milwaukee County Circuit judge on Friday, accusing her of obstructing the work of immigration officials and concealing the individual from arrest. Judge Hannah Dugan was charged and later released after appearing in court. The arrest comes after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) continues to assert that it will investigate and charge those who do not cooperate with federal authorities on immigration matters.
According to the FBI, Dugan was arrested on charges of helping an undocumented immigrant avoid capture. FBI Director Kash Patel said his team believes that Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents, however, his team was able to find the subject and take him into police custody.
The story became more complicated later that night when Patel posted a picture of Dugan's perp walk. Patel posted the picture on X with the caption that read "no one is above the law."
The DOJ's Confidentiality and Media Contacts Policy clearly states that employees of the agency should not disclose photos of defendants unless the shot is already an official part of the public record. This calls into question whether Patel was in violation of his department's policies.
Canadian Liberal Party Takes Home Surprise Victory in Nationwide Election
The Canadian Liberal Party pulled off the upset on Monday, largely due to its stance against President Donald Trump. During a victory speech early Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in his victory speech that Canada will never yield to the U.S. The focal point of the campaign had been the topic of trade tariffs and Trump's insistence that he wants to annex Canada.
Carney had run on the platform of fighting back against Trump. Although voters decided to send the Liberal Party back for a fourth straight term, Carney is likely to have a slim to none margin. The Liberals won just 169 seats, three short of what it needs to lead without the help of the minority party. The election was especially close in some constituencies, necessitating the need for judicial recounts in the weeks ahead.
