White House Condemns Alleged Call to Harm Trump on National Mall
Allies of the Trump administration are raising concern about an etching in the grass at the National Mall that appears to call for the assassination of the president. What did the etchings say, and what is the latest on the concerning situation? Read on for all of the details.
Concerning Numeric Message Discovered on National Mall
A number of federal and local government officials gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to investigate the sudden emergence of several large numbers etched into the grassy area east of the World War II Memorial. The numbers appeared to spell out "86 47." While the numerals 8, 6, and 7 were clearly visible, the numeral 4 was less clear, according to a report from the Washington Post.
The discovery of the etchings prompted a response from the National Guard, the Washington, D.C. Fire Department, and the U.S. Park Police. In addition, the U.S.Army Golden Knights parachute team landed on the spot in question upon the initial discovery.
The numbers could only be clearly read when looking down from up high. For instance, visitors at the top of the nearby Washington Monument could make out the etchings. The numeral 8 was also clearly visible from an Earth Cam positioned on top of the monument.
It is not clear how the numerals were etched into the grass, nor is it known when the markings first appeared. The etchings were not visible in pictures of the National Mall from Getty Images taken on June 5.
Although the meaning has not been confirmed, the number "86" is common slang used in the restaurant industry to remove a customer's order or to indicate the unavailability of an ingredient. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is the country's 47th president.
Supporters of Trump have argued in the past that the numbers 86 and 47 in succession translate to kill the president. A similar argument happened in May of 2025 when former FBI Director James Comey found himself in hot water after a social media message. The Trump Justice Department indicted Comey for a post on Instagram that featured the numbers "86 47" spelled out in seashells. In the indictment, the grand jury concluded that the term could be interpreted as a call to harm the president.
The latest numbers on the National Mall appear as brownish patches on the grass when standing at ground level. Experts say that the spots look like they could have been caused by weed killer.
Several emergency vehicles responded to the discovery of the numbers at about 1 pm local time on Wednesday. Law enforcement officials stood over the brown patches, likely testing the grass for substances while wearing gloves. Visitors to the mall were not allowed to walk on the grass near this part of the capital. A National Park Service (NPS) helicopter could be seen and heard circling above the area.
White House Response to the Discovery and the Implied Message
Not surprisingly, the White House strongly condemned the implied message of the numbers. A spokesperson told the Post, “Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible.” The statement went on to say that the offenders "should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head."
Similarly, CBS News said that a spokesperson for the U.S. Interior Department said that the numerals on the grass were "deranged vandalism," noting that it "will not be tolerated." The agency also reiterated that “Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable."
