Amanda Anisimova vs. Aryna Sabalenka tennis score, results, highlights as American reaches maiden Wimbledon final

WIMBLEDON, LONDON —Amanda Anisimova is into her first grand slam final after a thrilling win over world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

The American, who'll move up to No.8 in the world rankings on Monday, overcame the No.1 seed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to secure a spot in Saturday's final where she'll face either Iga Swiatek or Belinda Bencic.

Anisimova took 56 minutes to edge past Sabalenka in the opening set as her big serve caused the 27-year-old problems throughout. The Belarusian would respond with decisive winners and consistent serves of her own in the second to win by the same scoreline, 6-4.

In the third, Anisimova went from a break down to a break up as she found her groove and held her nerve in the final stages to pull off a huge upset and become only the fourth player since 1990 to defeat the world No.1 en route to a maiden grand slam final.

All this is made even more remarkable by losing in qualifying at Wimbledon last year having taken a break from tennis mid-2023 due to mental health issues.

"To be honest if you told me I would be in the final of Wimbledon I would not believe you," Anisimova said.

"Especially not this soon. It's been a year's turnaround. So many dream of competing on this court. To be in the final is just indescribable, honestly."

First point goes Sabalenka's way as Anisimova finds the net. She responds with a huge serve her opponent can't return, 15-15. It's been a little while but an ace from Sabalenka draws up 30-0. Anisimova's sliced forehand then goes wide before she overhits another as Sabalenka holds to love. Anisimova to serve for the match...

Anisimova* 6-4, 4-6, 5-2 Sabalenka

This is not the time to be double faulting, 0-15. She makes up for it with a backhand into the corner that leaves Sabalenka no chance. At 30-30, Sabalenka is made to rush to the net to collect a drop shot which she makes, but it's an easy assist for Anisimova to tap home. The American gets very fortunate with a net cord on the decisive point as Sabalenka can't return it. One game away from a big upset!

Anisimova 6-4, 4-6, 4-2 Sabalenka*

Anisimova applies the pressure, a delicious forehand kisses the baseline to get to 0-30. Sabalenka punishes her drop shot at the next with a backhand winner, 15-30. We're level when a thrilling rally of oohs and aahs results in Sabalenka's volley going just outside the tramline. Anisimova can't capitalise on the crucial break point though and the Belarusian keeps her nerve to get the hold.

Anisimova* 6-4, 4-6, 4-1 Sabalenka

This topsy-turvy match continues as Anisimova loses the first two points before Sabalenka makes a mistake. The world No.1 gets two break points but the first goes by as a forehand effort finds the net, 30-40. The same happens again as Anisimova forces her opponent out wide for a difficult return. Drop shots aplenty make up the next point but it's Anisimova with a stunning backhand down the line to flip the game on its head. Two brilliant winners later and Anisimova is now two games away from the Wimbledon final.

Anisimova 6-4, 4-6, 3-1 Sabalenka*

More big serves from Sabalenka cause her opponent problems but in the rallies the American is still holding her own as she gets to 15-30. Anisimova is almost matching Sabalenka's grunting levels with her shots now as they reach deuce. Anisimova has break point and gets it! Sabalenka has so much time for the ball to come down to smash it into space but she incredible over hits it at the net!

Anisimova* 6-4, 4-6, 2-1 Sabalenka

Anisimova's up 30-0 before Sabalenka has to change her racquet. It seems to work wonders as a backhand winner across court from a tight angle helps her level. Anisimova responds with a forehand winner of her own on route to holding serve.

Anisimova 6-4, 4-6, 1-1 Sabalenka*

Sabalenka looks in the groove now, hitting a neat ace out wide to get to 30-15. A few mistakes from Anisimova give Sabalenka breathing space before a fierce backhand return from the American has them at deuce. Sabalenka's mistake gifts her opponent break point but she can't take advantage of it. She has another opportunity though when the world No.1 misses a simple backhand. Another mistake from Sabalenka and she's broken! Sabalenka's groove has now disappeared in the space of a few points.

Anisimova* 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 Sabalenka

That second set has ignited the fire in Sabalenka's belly as she lets rip with some huge forehands on way to 0-40. She gets the break as Anisimova finds the net. That's a devastating blow for the American.

Anisimova 6-4, 4-6 Sabalenka*

A double fault from Sabalenka allows her opponent to level, 15-15. She then hits a forehand back across Anisimova that leaves the American no chance, 30-15. Anisimova gets level again though before a return can't find its way over, 40-30. Sabalenka takes the set as another big serve proves too hot to handle for the 13th seed. We're going to a decider!

Anisimova* 6-4, 4-5 Sabalenka

A double fault won't help Anisimova's nerves but she gets back level, 15-15. Patient play from the Belarusian over the next few points gets her to 30-40 and set point but Anisimova shuts that down with a forehand winner down the line. Sabalenka earns another set point but can't make the most of it as a forehand return crashes into the net cord. A mistake from the American brings up a third set point but once again a big serve causes her problems. She gets a fourth opportunity courtesy of a passing backhand winner when Anisimova had several chances to finish, point of the match so far! That hard work is undone by a backhand going beyond the baseline. Finally, Anisimova gets the hold and you can bet your life Sabalenka will be ready to wrap things up big time next game.

Anisimova 6-4, 3-5 Sabalenka*

Sabalenka doesn't carry that momentum into her serve though as she falls 0-30 behind. She gets back level with Anisimova doing all the running now. Sabalenka starting to turn it up a notch as an ace puts her within one game of the second set.

Anisimova* 6-4, 3-4 Sabalenka

Anisimova is toying with Sabalenka to go 30-0 up, having the No.1 seed running back and forth along the baseline before picking her killer spot. Two mistakes from the American draw them level though. Sabalenka brings up break point with some great defensive work and now it's Anisimova's turn to double fault at the worst possible time! She concedes the game.

Anisimova 6-4, 3-3 Sabalenka*

Sabalenka needs to stay composed here as Anisimova has her card marked. At 15-15, Anisimova returns one long but Sabalenka bizarrely shouts out in frustration as if she has lost the point! Sabalenka goes quiet as she messes up the next point, 30-30. The world No.1 comes to the net at the next point in a rare occurrence and wins the point. An ace seals it. New balls please.

Anisimova* 6-4, 3-2 Sabalenka

Sabalenka fails to return the first two serves, 30-0. The third follows suit but this time she lets everyone know how frustrated she is as she screams out. The fourth point? You guessed it, Sabalenka can't get it over the net and she trudges back to her chair.

Anisimova 6-4, 2-2 Sabalenka*

Sabalenka's powerful groundstrokes just aren't proving as effective against Anisimova as she's used to against other opponents. The American makes a couple of errors in this one though and at 40-15, Sabalenka delivers an ace out wide.

Anisimova* 6-4, 2-1 Sabalenka

An ace starts things off before the 13th seed finds the net at the next point, 15-15. A forehand effort goes wide from Anisimova at the next, she didn't quite get the right angle. But she's soon back in front as a forehand shot clips the baseline and Sabelenka can't get there in time. She goes another step closer to the final with the hold courtesy of more errors from Sabalenka in the decisive moments.

Anisimova 6-4, 1-1 Sabalenka*

That won't help Sabalenka's frustration as her opponent drills a returned forehand down the line on the opening point. She's soon back in front with a few big serves in quick succession. She seals the game with plenty of top spin on a forehand.

Anisimova* 6-4, 1-0 Sabalenka

Sabalenka briefly left the court between sets there. She'll be gutted to have lost the first set via double fault after such a high level of tennis throughout. Anisimova continues about her business though, a delicious forehand winner down the line gets her to 30-15. Sabalenka's backhand then goes beyond the baseline and her next can't clear the net.

Anisimova 6-4 Sabalenka* - Anisimova wins first set!

Anisimova takes the opening point before she finds the net with a weak forehand effort, 15-15. They're level again at 30-30 when Sabalenka unleashes a devastating backhand winner with the roar to match. Anisimova proves she too can hit backhand winners as her controlled shot gets her to deuce. The American wants to wrap the set up here and is refusing to give in to her opponent's efforts to hold. She brings up set point as Sabalenka fires a backhand just wide but that goes by in spectacular fashion as her return sees the ball fly high into the sky. She soon has another set point though and this time it's gift-wrapped by the world No.1 as she double faults to hand her the opening set.

Pause in play: Before the tenth game gets underway there's been another brief pause in play while another fan is attended to. Sabalenka goes over again to hand a water bottle - hope she has enough left for herself at this rate! It's in the same area, just a few rows away from where the previous incident occurred.

Anisimova* 5-4 Sabalenka

More strong serves with plenty of variety to keep Sabalenka guessing get the American to 30-0. Another ace catches Sabalenka off guard before Anisimova drills a backhand winner into the left side.

Anisimova 4-4 Sabalenka*

Neither player seems interested in getting involved in long rallies, it's either quick winners or mistakes. Or aces, as Sabalenka hits one right down the T to get to 30-30. The world No.1 gets the hold and there really is little to separate them right now.

Anisimova* 4-3 Sabalenka

An error and a double fault puts the American on the back foot, 0-30. She then overhits a forehand from the baseline and is facing three break points. The first sees Sabalenka return into the net and the second she puts too much power on the return, 30-40. Anisimova saves the third break point with a backhand right into the corner. She follows with an ace but then another double fault gets them back to deuce. Sabalenka brings up a fourth break point with a sliced backhand at the end of a long rally. She shows her frustration with her arms as she can't capitalise once again. Anisimova finally gets the hold two points later and Sabalenka knows that's a big missed opportunity.

Anisimova 3-3 Sabalenka*

A first double fault sees the Belarusian fall 0-30 behind. Aggressive hitting from both leads to a thrilling point as Anisimova brings up break points with a lovely backhand winner into the corner. Sabalenka saves one with a big serve. Another goes by as Anisimova hits a forehand long and she drops to her knees in shock at missing it. It's deuce.

There's then a brief pause in play as Sabalenka rushes over to someone in the crowd to pass them a bottle of water. The stewards are currently checking in on the spectator and an umbrella is up to give them some much needed shade.

After a few minutes, play resumes. Sabalenka hits a sweet forehand into space before Anisimova's return is long.

Anisimova* 3-2 Sabalenka

Sabalenka does really well to get down low and return an awkward shot at her feet from the baseline to which Anisimova then fires long. It's 15-30 as another forehand goes wide from the American. Sabalenka's return then goes high and long, 30-30. Another big serve sees the ball fly off Sabalenka's racquet and into the Royal Box!

Anisimova 2-2 Sabalenka*

Sabalenka's serve is proving a handful in these early stages. Her first ace of the match gets her to 40-0 before a wayward forehand from Anisimova seals it.

Anisimova* 2-1 Sabalenka

Sabalenka's sliced backhand backfires again, this time it fails to clear the net, 30-0. It's all a little cagey at the moment as Anisimova closes the game with a controlled volley at the net.

Anisimova 1-1 Sabalenka*

No-nonsense serving from Sabalenka is the starter of the day here as she races to 30-0. A backhand effort into the net gives Anisimova a point back before a short rally ends with the American hitting one beyond the baseline, 40-15. Sabalenka doesn't get enough on the slice and comes to the net to atone for the shot but Anisimova smashes it into space, 40-30. A huge serve closes out the game and Sabalenka is up and running.

Anisimova* 1-0 Sabalenka

Anisimova takes the opening point as Sabalenka fails to return the serve. A few more big serves force Sabalenka to return long, 40-15. The world No.1 returns with a delicious drop shot which catches her opponent off guard but the American gets the first hold of serve.
