WIMBLEDON, LONDON — World No.1 Jannik Sinner is into the semifinals of Wimbledon for the second time after beating American Ben Shelton in straight sets.

The 23-year-old defeated Shelton 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4 in a masterclass of a performance as he put to bed any concerns over an elbow injury, which had seen him needing an MRI scan on Tuesday and even missing a practice session in the build up.

Shelton, looking to reach his first ever Wimbledon semifinal, gave it his all and even led in the tie-break of the opening set before conceding seven straight points to the No.1 seed.

Sinner now boasts a record of 69-9 in majors after winning the first set in his career, and too many Shelton errors in the second and third sets proved decisive.

The two-time grand slam champions has now won 15 consecutive sets against Shelton, extending his record to six wins.

He'll face either Novak Djokovic or fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli in Friday's semifinal with Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz contesting the other.

A few nerves from Shelton on his serve sees Sinner get to 15-15. Sinner's return goes long to give Shelton breathing space but the Italian turns up the power at the next point to make it 30-30. Shelton misses an easy forehand by firing it into the net and Sinner has his first match point. He saves it with a stunning forehand into the corner, wow! He has to face a second match point as the same overhit forehand proves costly once more. A 140mph ace is quite the way to save a second match point. But he then double faults at the worst time! Is it third time lucky for Sinner? It sure is as Shelton overhits another forehand. Sinner is into the Wimbledon semifinals!

The crowd love that as Sinner gets his feet in a muddle trying to return an awkward shot and Shelton leads, 0-15. The Italian then puts a forehand shot wide of the tramlines. All that hard work is undone by Shelton failing to return consecutive serves, 30-30. Sinner's not fazed in the slightest by it all as it's his opponent who then can't clear the net, 40-30. He wraps the game up with a lovely winner beyond Shelton's reach who had come to the net. One game away.

Brilliant tennis from both players results in Sinner eventually hitting long, 30-0. Shelton then looks to unleash a forehand but disguises it into a deft drop shot to go 40-0. Sinner gets a point back but the American closes it with an ace.

Sinner responds to going 0-15 down with a lovely controlled volley down the middle during a long rally. He's back in control courtesy of Shelton failing to return the big serves and at 40-15 the American crashes one into the net. The world No.1 is two games away from the semis.

An overhead smash from Sinner leaves Shelton doing the splits on the floor as he attempts to change direction on the baseline. He takes a few seconds to recover before getting up and drilling a 140mph ace which the crowd love. He turns it around with more aces and shouts out "come on!" as he closes out the game. He's not shy of belief that's for sure!

Shelton's made far too many errors by overhitting his shots but that's in part down to Sinner's constant barrage of fierce shots landing right on the baseline. It's more of the same in this game as a poorly executed backhand slice from Shelton seals his fate.

We're rattling through the games in this third set. Shelton delivers a masterclass in serve and volley to get him to 40-15. He underhits a simple forehand at the next before Sinner does the same to gift him the game.

At 30-0, Shelton drills a 141mph serve right at Sinner and the ball almost bounces up into his face, yet Sinner sticks out a racquet and gets the return! He's soon level and then brings up break and set point as Shelton overhits. Sinner gets it! But Shelton only has himself to blame as he trudges back to his chair with another overhit effort going long.

Sinner races to 40-0. He's showing no signs of elbow problems and looks a different player to the one who lost the first two sets to Dimitrov 48 hours ago. He's a game away from the second set.

Now the errors creep into Shelton's serve as he faults on the first three attempts. At 15-15 he overhits another forehand shot, 15-30. He redeems himself with a serve out wide that Sinner can't return at full stretch. Sinner brings up break point with Shelton not getting enough power on a forehand from the baseline. The American unleashes on the next point though with a fierce forehand to save himself from being broken. Two big serves later and he wins the game. Great resilience from the 22-year-old.

Shelton's backhand slice isn't paying off and you can see he's frustrated. But he gets to 30-30 with Sinner making a couple of forehand errors. After a couple of deuce exchanges it's Shelton's error that costs him the game.

A bit like Taylor Fritz yesterday during the third set, Shelton's forehand seems to have deserted him. He's overhitting everything right now. A couple of tentative shots from Sinner allows Shelton to get two break points though. Sinner saves both, much to his opponent's frustration. That would have been the perfect response to the tie-break. An ace and another big serve turn it around for the Italian.

Another forehand effort from Shelton goes agonisingly beyond the baseline, 2-5. It's the same again at the next point and Sinner's now on the brink of the first set. He connects with a simple shot all wrong and it sails high and long. Sinner held his nerve in the tie-break, proving exactly why he's world No.1

Another shot right into the corner from Sinner prompts Shelton's sliced return to find the net, 2-2. The 10th seed then double faults to fall behind for the first time in the tie-break. Shelton then overhits a forehand, 2-4.

Sinner's return off Shelton's serve is long, 1-0. Brilliant play from the American as he lures Sinner in with a drop shot, which he makes, but Shelton is equally as quick to return from a tight angle, 2-0. Sinner gets one back with a sweet forehand.

At 15-15, a long rally sees Shelton hit a lovely tweener but Sinner has great reactions to cushion the volley for the point, 15-30. The longest rally of the match then ends with Sinner coming to the net which prompts Shelton to try the lob but it's way beyond the baseline, 30-30. An overhead smash from Shelton is too hot to handle for Sinner, 40-30. The world No.1 then hits a backhand winner down the line to get to deuce. Shelton clings on to hold and the fans are loving the American's early efforts!

Anything Shelton can do, Sinner can do too as he also fires a huge couple of serves and an ace on route to 40-0. The last point sees the American lure his opponent to the net with an awkward slice but Sinner just about scoops it over the net to hold to love.

A double fault for Shelton sees him fall 15-30 behind. He follows that up with a 139mph ace though! The next is 140mph and Sinner returns it but it goes high and out. Another ace seals the game. That'll be a big part of his game plan today for sure.

At 15-15, Sinner slips and has to brace himself with an outstretched arm. This time, thankfully, there's no lasting damage to his (other) elbow. He's inches from nailing a backhand passing shot but just misses the line, so Shelton is able to serve out the game.

Shelton lands a 116mph second serve right on the service line, and Sinner somehow returns it with interest. He pumps a fist as he takes a 30-15 lead. However, Shelton's awesome power on the serve gets him out of trouble.

3:23 p.m. BST: At 22 years of age, Shelton has become the youngest American man to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since a 21-year-old Roddick achieved the feat in 2004.

"He had nuke, bigger serve than me. He could run all day," Shelton said of Roddick. "He was a grinder, just a physical beast. Someone that I’ve looked up for inspiration. Massive forehand, great footwork.

“Someone who’s been there along the way, sending some messages, giving some advice. Not always directly, but my dad or through Dean Goldfine, who was coaching me when I first came on tour. It’s kind of just been a great resource as another American who did a lot of the things that I’d like to do in this sport and did them at a really young age.

“Seems like everything that I’ve done, it’s the first to be done since him. He’s got me beat pretty much in every category.

“No, it’s pretty cool to be mentioned in the same sentence as him. Yeah, definitely look up to him and think very highly of him.”

2 p.m. BST: The big talking point of today's match is going to be on Sinner's elbow injury. Let's bring you up to date. 

The Australian Open and US Open champion fell awkwardly in the opening set of the match against Dimitrov and following the walkover win on Monday, the Italian had an MRI scan on his elbow. 

He didn't practice on grass yesterday but instead did a light session on hard courts. Ahead of his match today, he was spotted practicing on grass with a sleeve on his right arm.

"No news on the MRI just yet,” said Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill on ESPN last night. “He had it earlier today and he can’t take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball. So Simone and myself just fed him a few balls out of the basket.

“It’s not a bad thing sometimes (to practise on hard court). The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off. (Andre) Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
