Braves could soon cut ties with $81 million superstar in massive trade to Giants
The Atlanta Braves have some seismic decisions ahead at the 2025 trade deadline.
Atlanta took their first step in the right direction by winning a series on Wednesday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Still, they're nine games under .500 and nine games back of a playoff spot entering play on Thursday.
With the trade deadline seven weeks away, the Braves are going to have to decide whether it's worth keeping their playoff hopes alive at the cost of hanging onto their expiring veterans. And designated hitter Marcell Ozuna is the most consequential veteran they have.
Ozuna, 34, is one of the premier sluggers in the sport, and the Braves might be able to get a serious trade haul for only two months of his services. Not trading Ozuna and missing the playoffs would be a worst-case scenario for this season.
On Wednesday, FanSided's Zachary Rotman named one National League rival--the San Francisco Giants--as a possible trade destination for Ozuna next month.
"Ozuna would instantly become the most feared hitter in this Giants lineup. Sure, it'd be helpful if he could play the outfield still or chip in at first base, especially since Wilmer Flores has done most of the DH'ing this season, but Ozuna's bat would be an important one to acquire," Rotman wrote.

"Flores can play first base, even if he's subpar defensively. The hit they'd take on that end would be worth it to add a bat of Ozuna's caliber."
If the Braves are going to get back into the playoff hunt, the Giants will be one of the teams they'll have to contend with for a wild-card spot. And Atlanta was just swept in heartbreaking fashion in San Francisco last week.
It wouldn't be fun for Braves fans to see Ozuna launching homers by the bay this August, but sometimes, a team has to make an unpopular decision in the short term to enable long-term prosperity.
