Braves-Yankees trade pitch sees Atlanta cut ties with $35 million 3x All-Star
The Atlanta Braves' subpar start to the season has some pessimistic analysts dreaming about a potential sell-off.
It's understandable to a degree--the 27-31 Braves have been a pretty tough watch on a nightly basis. They've lost tons of close games late, they fail to sustain winning streaks of any kind, and their lineup just hasn't produced like the machine it was in years past.
As such, there's been plenty of buzz that the Braves might trade away some of their expiring free agents if things go south. But one name might come as a surprise even to the Braves fans most worried about a sell-off: second baseman Ozzie Albies.
On Tuesday, FanSided's Stephen Parello named Albies as a potential trade fit for the New York Yankees, who may very well be in the market for a second baseman after shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third base upon his return from the injured list.
"Atlanta has top prospect Nacho Alvarez Jr., looking to make his way back from a wrist injury, who may serve as a potential Albies replacement. Beyond him, though, their farm system is rich in pitchers, but poor in position player talent," Parello wrote.
"Moving on from Albies may give Atlanta a chance to restock their depth in the minors while not punting on competing entirely. For the Yankees, Albies would represent a buy-low candidate with whom they'd have the ultimate flexibility."

Albies certainly isn't having a good season by anyone's standards, especially his own. With a .654 OPS, Albies is on pace for his worst offensive season by a mile, and he frankly wasn't all that good in an injury-shortened 2024 season, either.
However, it's easy to forget that Albies is still just 28, and his $35 million contract, which has $7 million club options for each of the next two seasons, is still incredibly cheap. Any team trading for him would do so in anticipation of having him start for the next three years.
It might not be totally out of the question that the Braves would ship Albies to New York, but it certainly doesn't seem like one of the more realistic possibilities for either team heading into the summer.
