Brewers veteran requests trade after losing starting job

The Milwaukee Brewers are 36-33 as of June 12, which has them in third place in the National League Central.

On Wednesday, the Brewers decided to call up star pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski, who regularly throws in the triple digits and has been fun to watch in the minor leagues.

With the promotion of Misiorowski, the Brewers then sent veteran Aaron Civale to the bullpen. In turn, Civale requested a trade on Thursday, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic

"Veteran right-hander Aaron Civale, bumped from the Milwaukee Brewers’ rotation by top prospect Jacob Misiorowski, has asked for a trade. Civale’s agent, Jack Toffey, said he made the request to Brewers general manager Matt Arnold after the team informed the pitcher he was moving to the bullpen."

Civale's agent released a statement on the trade requests but insisted there are no hard feelings.

“The conversation was very professional,” Jack Toffey said. “I just very respectfully said that Aaron would really like an opportunity to continue his career as a starter. He’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year.”

Civale was selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Guardians and has bounced around quite a bit. He has spent time with each of the Guardians, Tampa Bay Rays, and now the Brewers for the past season and a half.

Milwaukee acquired him via a trade with Tampa Bay in July of 2024, and he went 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 14 appearances last season.

So far in 2025, Civale has gone just 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in five appearances, but the veteran wants to continue to be used as a starter rather than making a transition to the bullpen.
