Broncos labeled 'sneaky team' to sign Lions $11 million castoff in free agency

The Denver Broncos have a strong situation along the edge going into the 2025 NFL season, but one analyst thinks they could make another move to further bolster the position.

In an article naming possible landing spots for former Detroit Lions edge rusher Za'Darius Smith, who remains available in free agency, NFL Trade Rumors' Ethan Woodie called the Broncos a "sneaky team" to possibly acquire the ex-Pro Bowler.

Why? Well, Woodie believes the Broncos could use another depth option to fortify their group behind Nik Bonitto and Jonathan Cooper.

"When I was scanning for teams that could use Smith’s services, the Broncos stuck out to me as a sneaky team who might have a weaker depth chart at edge defender than you’d think," he wrote. "The starters are set between Nik Bonitto and Jonathan Cooper, but it gets thin quickly behind them. Jonah Elliss is the projected third pass rusher as it stands today, and though he had a decent rookie season, it’s a leap of faith to pencil him into a major role this year.

"Convincing Smith to sign on for a backup role might be tricky, but he’d still be on the field a ton in Denver," Woodie added.

While Smith is getting long in the tooth (33 in September), he showed he still has a ton to offer after tallying nine sacks last season, four of which came with the Lions after he was traded there from the Cleveland Browns at the deadline.

Smith would amount to an elite depth option for Detroit, although it remains to be seen if he'd be willing to take on such a role, as Woodie pointed out.

However, it's important to note that Smith only played 60% of snaps with the Lions in 2024, so it's not like he played a ton, and he has experience lining up all over the defensive line, so there are multiple ways to get him involved.

Smith was set to make about $11 million in 2025 before the Lions cut him, with the team's general manager citing the fact that the Lions couldn't afford him as the reason behind cutting the veteran.

The Broncos are currently sitting with $15 million in cap space, so they could squeeze in a luxury like Smith on a one-year deal if they really want to.

And it's something Denver should consider. After all, you can never have enough fire power off the edge, especially in a loaded AFC West and conference.
