Chelsea chase PSG star to solve long-standing No.1 problem
Chelsea’s aggressive summer rebuild is gaining serious momentum ahead of the 2025/26 season with manager Enzo Maresca targeting upgrades across all areas of his squad.
After lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy at the end of 2024/25, the Blues have wasted no time reforming the squad to match Maresca’s philosophy
They began by activating Liam Delap’s £30m [$40m] release clause after he impressed at Ipswich.
Then came 20-year-old midfielder Dario Essugo, signed from Sporting CP for £18.5m [$25m], after an eye-catching loan spell at Las Palmas last season.
Joao Pedro, signed for £60m [$81m] from Brighton, joined in time to link up with the FIFA Club World Cup squad and has already brought flair and goals to a forward line that needed improvement.
However, there are no signs of slowing down, after a £55m [$74m] swoop for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens, a winger who had already been spotted celebrating on the pitch during their quarterfinal win over Palmeiras.

Alongside the more high-profile arrivals, Mamadou Sarr has come in from Strasbourg on an eight-year deal, with Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez already signed pre-agreements to arrive this summer.
Chelsea now want PSG star
Chelsea are still searching for a solution to a problem that's troubled them for over a year as Maresca targets a reliable first-choice goalkeeper.
Last season, Robert Sanchez and Filip Jörgensen shared time between the posts, but neither delivered the consistency or authority needed.
Now, as reported by L’Équipe, Chelsea have turned their attention to PSG's No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma whose contract talks have stalled with a year remaining.

The Italy international is expected to delay any decision until after the Club World Cup final, even though PSG have made a renewal offer.
The Blues are aware a deal won't be easy or cheap, especially as Donnarumma reportedly earns close to £734,000 [$991,000] a week before bonuses.
But with both Manchester clubs also monitoring the situation, the Blues need to act quickly, if they believe he can fix their ongoing struggles in goal.
