Dodgers could swing trade for $21 million Reds starter at deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers' starting rotation is dealing with some key injuries. While players are expected to return, they could swing a trade for another quality starter.

The Dodgers are currently without Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Tony Gonsolin and Rōki Sasaki. While Snell and Glasnow are working their way back, Sasaki's timeline is less clear. FanSided's Sam Phalen suggested the Dodgers trade for Nick Martinez of the Cincinnati Reds.

"If Martinez is available, he has the perfect combination of upside and versatility for what the Dodgers are looking for," wrote Phalen. "Martinez would be an ideal trade target for Los Angeles."

Martinez signed a two-year, $26 million deal in 2023 to join the Reds. He declined a $12 million player option last offseason and signed the $21 million qualifying offer. Last night, Martinez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning.

On the season, Martinez has a 4.12 ERA in 16 starts. He may not be an ace, but he could be a key player in the back of the Dodgers' rotation. The Dodgers' rotation is not in need of an ace when they have their players healthy. However, losing Sasaki and Gonsolin for potentially an extended period of time could put them in the market for a starter.

Shohei Ohtani is working his way back to being a starter. When everyone is healthy, the Dodgers could have a rotation of Ohtani, Snell, Glasnow, Martinez and Clayton Kershaw. If the Dodgers get Sasaki and Gonsolin back, they could still use Martinez in the bullpen.

"Martinez’s high upside as a starter and intriguing versatility as a reliever makes him the perfect trade target for Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers," wrote Phalen.
