Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz results, highlights: Sheeraz knocks Berlanga out, Shakur Stevenson earns impressive win

NEW YORK โ€” Edgar Berlanga and Shakur Stevenson had something to prove as they headlined a Ring-produced card in their backyard in New York. Berlanga, a New York native, and New Jersey's Stevenson were ready to showcase their value to boxing and The Ring in Flushing.

It ended up being Stevenson doing precisely that, while Berlanga was seeing stars by the end of the night.

Berlanga (23-2) got knocked down by the much more powerful and skilled Sheeraz (22-0-1). The fans at Louis Armstrong Stadium saw Berlanga, who entered the ring with Fat Joe, get leaned back and out.

Sheeraz used his reach to push Berlanga back. The latter, who went the distance against Canelo Alvarez, got trapped into attempting to go shot-for-shot within the distance. At several points, Sheeraz got rocked by uppercuts and hooks. In the fourth, Berlanga went down thanks to combinations. He went down again a few moments later.

In the fifth, Sheeraz was relentless, punishing Berlanga until the referee saw enough. Even if he didn't intervene, the result may have been inevitable.

Berlanga will have to go back to the drawing board after, whatever that may be. Sheeraz is now in line to face Canelo for super middleweight gold. He must first see what happens when Canelo faces Terence Crawford.

Speaking of Crawford, he was in the corner of Shakur Stevenson (24-0), who successfully defended the WBC lightweight title against William Zepeda (33-0). Stevenson, discussed as a reserved fighter, played Zepeda's game and was successful.

Zepeda landed for volume, and at one point hurt Stevenson. However, Stevenson's counter shots were spectacular, landing harder as Zepeda's power was depleting. Up next for Stevenson could be a unification fight or against Floyd Schofield.

Amanda Serrano had all of Puerto Rico on her side against Katie Taylor on Friday night. The same crowd supported Subriel Matias as he beat Alberto Puello via majority decision for the WBC super lightweight title.

Matias looked sharp from the start, punching and landing harder as the fight went on. Acting as the aggressor throughout, he would not let up even as Puello (24-1) tried his best to slow things down.

Matias (23-2) is now on a three-fight win streak, holding gold again after Liam Paro took the IBF title away from him. A fight in November against Dalton Smith may be next.

David Morrell and Imam Khataev went to war with one another for ten rounds. The hard-hitting fighters landed brutal shots all over. In the middle of the fight, Morrell got dropped. Just as it looked like he was down for the count, Morrell recovered and provided some punishment himself.

Morrell (12-1) won via split decision, earning a win back after David Benavidez beat him. Khataev (10-1) was dealing with a failed drug test ahead of the fight that left his status in doubt. He ended up shining in this fight, even with a loss.

Opening the card, regarded Ring prospect Reito Tsutsumi (2-0) took down Michael Ruiz (2-8-1) three times, the third time in the second round. Tsutsumi continues to be someone to watch out for.
