Germany vs. Portugal prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for UEFA Nations League semifinal

Two European giants meet in Munich for a spot in the UEFA Nations League title match on Wednesday as Germany host Portugal in the first semifinal at the Allianz Arena, the site of last weekend's Champions League final.

Germany have never even reached this stage of a Nations League competition since the first edition of the tournament in 2019, while Portugal have not been back since lifting the trophy in the inaugural iteration of the event.

The hosts could use a trophy, given they have fallen down in the European pecking order in recent World Cup cycles. Ranked 10th in the world by FIFA, this is shockingly the highest they have landed on the chart since falling from No. 1 all the way to 15 in the wake of their terrible 2018 World Cup.

The winner of this match will meet either Spain or France in the final and would almost surely be considered the underdog against both of those potential opponents.

The absence of Jamal Musiala due to injury greatly affected Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarterfinal exit this season, and it will likely also cause issues for the German national team. While Florian Wirtz is a world-class player capable of breaking down an opponent, the potential new Liverpool man was clearly affected by an injury down the stretch of the season and may still not be quite himself.

It's impossible to know which Portugal will show up in the attacking half — the one that put five past both Poland and Denmark in recent matches, or the one blanked by both Denmark and Scotland — but there may be chances for them to strike against an injury-riddled Germany back line missing both Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck.

Germany vs. Portugal best bet

  • Pick: Under 2.5 total goals
  • Odds: +100 (DraftKings)

While both of these teams are capable of scoring goals in bunches, against the top sides, these two nations usually rein it in.

Portugal haven't played a top-ranked nation in quite some time, but their most recent matches include a 0-0 draw with France in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, a 2-0 win over Uruguay at the latest World Cup, a 1-0 defeat and 1-1 draw with Spain in the last Nations League, and a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in the Euro 2020 Round of 16.

On the flip side, Germany are more prone to chaos, such as their recent Nations League quarterfinals with Italy where both legs went wacky, but they still can play close games. They drew with Spain 1-1 in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals across the 90 minutes of regulation, beat France 2-1 in a friendly last March where both sides scored goals in the final three minutes of the match, and drew with Spain 1-1 again in the 2022 World Cup.

Expect both teams to be truncated in their attack overall.

Germany vs. Portugal prop bet

It's easy to argue that no single player has been more important to the fortunes of their big European club over the last two years than Bruno Fernandes, who has almost single-handedly kept Manchester United from unprecedented disappointment.

He has been equally important to the Portugal national team, where he's contributed to five goals across seven games in this current Nations League competition, with two goals and three assists. He is deservingly on set-piece duty for Portugal (albeit not penalties, given the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo), which adds additional value as well.

The 30-year-old is tireless on the ball and works incredibly hard and should be central to every Portugal buildup, especially if Rafael Leao continues to be a anonymous on the left wing, having scored just one goal and assisted two others in his last 15 international appearances.
