Harrison Mevis will compete for New York Jets' starting kicker job

The New York Jets have made an interesting addition to their roster by adding a player from the UFL. The Jets have signed kicker Harrison Mevis, who is coming off a great season in the UFL. He made 20/21 kicks last season, and now the Jets will get to see what he can do in training camp. Mevis played four seasons at Missouri and missed only one extra point in 149 attempts. As for field goals, he went 89/106 during his career. He is known as the “Thiccer Kicker” due to his 5’11”, 236lb stature.

Mevis joins the Jets’ kicker depth chart along with Anders Carlson and Caden Davis. It will be interesting to see how he performs in training camp and if he does enough to win the starting job. We have seen a few players transition from the UFL and achieve immediate success in the NFL. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey came over from the USFL and has turned himself into one of the best kickers in football.

The Jets have had inconsistent kicking over the past few seasons. Their kicking woes have shown the importance of having a quality kicker. Last season, Greg Zuerlein converted 9 of 15 field goals in the eight games he played. They also had Anders Carlson kick in five games, where he went 8/10. While kicker competition is not something most fans worry about, it is a vital part of winning games during the season. When the game is on the line and you need a kick to win, that is when everyone cares about the kicker.

There is no guarantee that we will ever see Mevis in a regular-season game, but he is a feel-good story and someone whom many people will root for during training camp.
