Insiders gives major updates on Fred VanVleet's contract timeline with Rockets
The Rockets just made a huge trade a little over 24 hours ago to acquire Kevin Durant.
It's a huge addition to the roster, but the Rockets still have some more decisions to sort out, as they try to craft a championship roster for next season.
One of those decisions/moves they have to make is Fred VanVleet's contract, which we were able to recently get a major update on Monday.

What is the update on VanVleet's contract?
NBA insider Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported the Rockets are expected to decline Fred VanVleet's team option for the 2025-26 season.
VanVleet is still expected to return, as they will look to negotiate a new multi-year extension, according to Iko.
*Marc Stein did later report that "Houston is still weighing its options and has not ruled out exercising the team option."
Either way, money on certain players' contracts is set to kick in over the next couple of seasons, so they will want to open up whatever space they can.
Coming to terms on a new deal with VanVleet would likely be more team-friendly to support their attempt at a championship run over the next few seasons, if it happens.

For example, Alperen Sengun will make around $34 million in the 2025-26 NBA season, after signing an extension last year.
Kevin Durant only has one year left on his contract, and I'm sure the plan is to re-sign him on a deal since they traded for him.
Houston will also have to pay Jabari Smith if they want to keep him, who is a RFA next summer.

That could be a solid payday for Smith since Houston would have to counter any offer he could accept elsewhere if they want to keep him.
VanVleet's production has gone down slightly since signing with Houston a couple of seasons ago, but his usage rate has also gone down from 23.2% in his final year with Toronto to a career low of 17.7% last season.
