Iowa City High prep, ex-Hawk selected in MLB Draft
For the first time in his baseball career, Cade Obermueller will be leaving Iowa City.
The former Iowa City High standout and ex-University of Iowa Hawkeye pitcher was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the 2025 MLB Amateur Draft Sunday night.
Obermueller was the No. 63 overall pick after putting together an All-American season with Iowa in the spring.

This is his second time being selected, as the Texas Rangers drafted him in the 19th round last year. As a prep with the Little Hawks, Obermueller was regarded as the No. 1 left-handed pitcher in Iowa by Perfect Game.

He finished his senior season 7-1 with 103 strikeouts in just over 50 innings pitched with an earned run average of 1.11 and a WHIP of 0.89. As a junior, Obermueller went 4-1 with 36 strikeouts in just under 30 innings.
Obermueller's father, Wes, played in the majors for the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers and Florida Marlins. He also went in the second round of the draft.
At Iowa, Obermueller earned third-team All-American honors after going 5-3 with a 3.2 earned run average and 117 strikeouts this past year. He recorded five quality starts.
Overall with the Hawkeyes, he made 43 appearances, sporting an 11-7 record with 226 strikeouts in 165 innings.
