Kristaps Porzingis trade grades: Hawks get a starting center, Celtics save money, Nets get a draft pick

The flurry of trades before the NBA draft continued on Tuesday night as the Hawks, Celtics, and Nets came to terms on a three-team deal that will send Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta.

The Celtics already started their one-year teardown by trading away Jrue Holiday on Monday night in a trade that saved them $40 million off their luxury tax payments. They continued to trim down salary in this trade, taking a step back while Jayson Tatum (Achilles) takes a year off.

Meanwhile, the Hawks saw the door in the East wide open with Achilles injuries to Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton, and Damian Lillard, and they took a big swing. Was the price worth it?

Here are grades for the three teams involved.

Kristaps Porzingis trade grade: Hawks

Clint Capela was a dependable center for the Hawks over the past five seasons, but his time with the team was coming to an end. Atlanta was not expected to retain the 31-year-old free agent after he had lost his starting spot to Onyeka Okongwu midway through the season.

Okongwu played well in that starting role, but he is undersized at 6-foot-8 and isn't a great 3-point threat. In trading for Porzingis, the Hawks get a completely different look to throw at teams.

Porzingis is a great rim protector who should help cover for some of Trae Young's defensive weaknesses. He's also one of the better stretch shooters in the league, and he's developed into an ultra-efficient post weapon after struggling in that area earlier in his career. He can take some of the creation burden off Young while also playing in the five-out style that coach Quin Snyder has successfully utilized in the past.

Health is always the big question mark with Porzingis. He played in only 42 games last season and missed huge chunks of both of the Celtics' playoff runs. Having a starting-caliber big man in Okongwu should help keep some of the load off him.

The Hawks now have a very good starting five but at the cost of their bench depth. Georges Niang was one of Quin Snyder's favorites. The Hawks had just traded three second-round picks along with Bogdan Bogdanovic in order to acquire Terance Mann at last year's trade deadline. That's not great asset management, but give credit to Atlanta for moving on from him when they realized that it wasn't working as well as they had hoped.

Atlanta still needs a backup point guard to make up for the loss of Mann. That's a hole that they've had on their roster for quite some time, but they're a good team in a very weak conference. They should be able to finally get out of the play-in tournament, which is where they've been stuck over the previous four seasons. And they still have the No. 13 pick in this draft in order to keep on making improvements.

Grade: B

Kristaps Porzingis trade grade: Celtics

The Celtics weren't going to spend huge money on a team without Tatum, so a Porzingis trade seemed inevitable. This trade gets them out of the dreaded second apron and saves them a massive amount of money — over $196 million, according to an estimate by Spotrac's Keith Smith

That's not what fans want to hear, but it is important for the future of the team. Don't be surprised if Boston continues to shed salary in order to open up flexibility for when Tatum returns to play.

In the meantime, the Celtics got a rotation player in Niang who fits Joe Mazzulla's offensive system well. Niang is a solid career 39.9-percent 3-point shooter and a good decision-maker with the ball. He's a smart player who has defensive limitations because of a lack of speed and athleticism. He's going to get up a lot of 3s in Boston.

Niang is a decent player, but he is certainly not on Porzingis' level. We have to see what Boston's next moves are. For now, this does seem like an underwhelming return.

Grade: C+

Kristaps Porzingis trade grade: Nets

The Nets were the only team with significant cap space headed into this summer. They used some of it up by absorbing the contract of Mann. In exchange for their trouble, they're getting the No. 22 pick in the draft. That's a pretty good use of their space.

Mann isn't a bad player either. He was streaky for the Hawks, but he was a good spot starter for the Clippers in previous years. He's a career 37.2-percent 3-point shooter who plays tough defense and gives great effort any time he is on the floor.

The Nets now have a ton of picks headed into the 2025 draft, including Nos. 8, 19, 22, 26, and 27. A consolidation trade seems likely to happen because they will have a tough time rostering that many new guys.
