Lakers eyeing Nuggets star as potential Luka Doncic running mate

Last season, the LA Lakers pulled off a stunning blockbuster by acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. As they continue to build out around their new superstar talent, one key member of the Denver Nuggets is on their radar as a possible running mate.

The Lakers have been a big topic of conversation this summer, largely due to the uncertain future of LeBron James. Since opting into his player option, there has been growing discourse about the 21-time All-Star being traded. However, as of now, reports indicate that LeBron and the Lakers have not discussed ending their partnership.

As LeBron's name continues to pop up in rumors, insider Anthony Irwin dove into the latest regarding the star forward. When discussing possible trade avenues, Nikola Jokic was cited as a player LA is eager to pair with Doncic.

"There is no trade the Lakers would make that would give James a better chance at a title than he has playing with Doncic," Irwin wrote. "There’s also no trade James would accept that would benefit the Lakers and fit their parameters as they look to pair Luka Doncic with either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokic."

Throughout their years of playing pranks on one another during All-Star festivities, Doncic's friendship with Jokic is well documented. The two have talked about playing together in the past, but neither is willing to leave their respective team to join the other.

Pairing Doncic and Jokic would give the Lakers a duo they can contend with for the foreseeable future. As two of the top stars in the league, them teaming up would be a nightmare scenario for the rest of the league.

Seeing that LA doesn't plan on shopping LeBron, the idea of Jokic and Doncic joining forces is still more of a pipe dream than reality.
