Lakers legend Magic Johnson takes shot at Celtics while discussing $10 billion deal

The Los Angeles Lakers once again shook up the basketball world on Wednesday. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Buss family agreed to sell majority ownership of the franchise to Mark Walter for $10 billion, marking the largest ever sale of a professional sports franchise.

Magic Johnson, who's ties to the franchise date back to the 1979 NBA Draft when they selected him first overall, shared multiple tweets praising the move. He began by praising Jeanie Buss and Walter for the deal.

"Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the @Lakers legacy and tradition of winning - Mark Walter, my business partner and friend! Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand," Lakers legend Magic Johnson tweeted. "The proof is in the pudding on what he’s been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!"

The five-time NBA champion then sent a message to Lakers fans.

"Laker fans should be ecstatic," Johnson continued. "A few things I can tell you about Mark - he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way. AND he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike - they are competitive people, l have big hearts, love to give back, and both prefer to be behind the scenes. This makes all the sense in the world. I am so so SO happy and excited for @Lakers fans all over the world!!"

In true Laker fashion, Johnson made sure to take a shot at the Boston Celtics, who recently sold for nearly half the price.

"Just like I thought, when the Celtics sold for $6B, I knew the Lakers were worth $10B!"

Johnson later expressed his love for both Buss and Walter, while revealing that he called the former to congratulate her on the sale. The former owner will remain in her role as Lakers governor, while her family retains just over 15% ownership of the franchise. The late Jerry Buss purchased the team for $67.5 million in 1979.
