Lakers predicted to acquire former Celtics guard to bolster depth
The Los Angeles Lakers entered the 2025 NBA playoffs with sky-high expectations.
After pairing LeBron James with Luka Dončić, the Lakers expected to go on a deep playoff run.
However, their first-round playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves exposed critical roster flaws that no amount of star power could mask.
As the offseason unfolds, the Lakers are poised to pursue significant upgrades to bolster their depth chart, potentially targeting a former rival to address their defensive shortcomings.
Athlon Sports' Matt John recently speculated about a trade for the Lake Show involving a former Defensive Player of the Year.

“It takes more than two players to win a title, and the Lakers' playoff performance in the first round is proof of that,” John wrote.
“The Minnesota Timberwolves made easy work of the Lakers in the first round because, despite adding one of the NBA's best players at the NBA trade deadline, the roster was too flawed for them to go on a substantial playoff run."
"Los Angeles will look for upgrades up and down the roster," John continued.
"It may even turn to alumni of sworn rival, the Boston Celtics, for help. One Celtics alum that would certainly help is Marcus Smart. Smart, who was traded by Boston two years ago, could be on the market again, as the Washington Wizards don't have much use for him."
"Smart is a former Defensive Player of the Year who helped the Celtics make multiple extensive playoff runs, including a run to the NBA Finals in 2022. However, since Boston traded him in 2023, Smart has only appeared in 54 games combined over the last two seasons. Nonetheless, a healthy Smart could help LA.”
In the 2024-25 season with the Wizards, Smart averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.4 steals in 15 games, shooting nearly 40 percent from three.
Smart's expiring $21.6 million contract makes him an attractive trade target for a Lakers team needing immediate impact without long-term financial strain. Smart represents a cost-effective solution to shore up the backcourt.
