Luka Doncic has offseason verdict for ‘everybody’ on Lakers following playoff exit

Context:

The Los Angeles Lakers, despite having high expectations with stars like LeBron James and Luka Doncic, faced another playoff disappointment after exiting in the first round. The team managed to win 50 games during the season, showcasing offensive prowess with standout performances from players like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura. However, the lack of a significant presence in the center position, especially after trading Anthony Davis, remains a critical area for improvement. Luka Doncic emphasized the need for both team and individual growth during the offseason to address these shortcomings. With strategic additions and player development, the Lakers have the potential to reclaim their status as championship contenders next season.

Dive Deeper:

  • The Lakers' season was marked by high expectations due to the presence of superstars LeBron James and Luka Doncic, yet ended in disappointment with a first-round playoff exit.

  • Despite the exit, the team had a successful regular season, winning 50 games, largely due to their offensive capabilities, with players like Austin Reaves significantly improving their performance.

  • Austin Reaves had a career year, raising his points per game from 15.9 to 20.2, while Rui Hachimura established himself as a key role player with a leading three-point percentage of 41.3%.

  • The absence of a strong center was felt deeply, especially in their playoff matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, highlighting a critical area for roster enhancement.

  • Luka Doncic called for a focus on improvement both as a team and individually during the offseason, underscoring the importance of addressing the team's weaknesses.

  • The Lakers' final two playoff losses were narrow, with a combined 10-point deficit, suggesting that with the right adjustments, they could be competitive again soon.

  • With the right mix of new personnel and development of current players, the Lakers are poised to be strong contenders in the next season's championship run.

  • The Los Angeles Lakers are all about competing for championships and when you employ LeBron James and Luka Doncic at the same time, the expectations get even higher.

  • This season will be viewed as a failure when it comes down to it. The Lakers lost in the first round again, but despite that, the team won 50 games this year and they truly aren’t far from making another deep playoff run next season.

  • Offensively speaking, the Lakers are one of the NBA’s best. Doncic is tremendous when it comes to manipulating a defense. It was a career year for Austin Reaves as he jumped from 15.9 points per game to 20.2. James is still playing at a high level, but he could walk away at any time now.

  • Players like Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Gabe Vincent provided shooting and defense. Hachimura led the team in three point percentage at 41.3% on 4.2 attempts a game, establishing himself as a premier role player with elite shooting prowess.

  • So where can they get better? To start, the Lakers must add at least one center to the roster after what happened against the Minnesota Timberwolves. There is more to it of course and according to Doncic, it starts with them.

  • “There’s obviously a lot of different things we can do, I can do,” he said. “Obviously everybody has got to get better. We’re gonna have a long summer and should focus on how we can improve as a team, as individuals,” Doncic said while reflecting on their playoff exit.

  • That’s certainly the correct mindset from a player's perspective. Yes they lost in five games, however, the final two losses were by a combined 10-point deficit. It’s very easy to point the finger at the front office for not bringing in a starting big man after trading Anthony Davis but that’s the world we are in.

  • The Lakers had a real chance this season with their current roster, but the truth is they all fell short. With a whole offseason ahead, a mixture of adding the right personnel along with player development, this squad can be right back in the title picture a year from now.
