Maple Leafs trade pitch grabs young star to help replace Mitch Marner

The Toronto Maple Leafs should feel good about their offseason.

Despite losing Mitch Marner to a sign-and-trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, he is not an effective enough forward in the postseason (as evidenced by his 1 goal and 10 assists over 26 career Games 5 through 7).

Plus, his eight-year, $96 million price tag would have suffocated a front office in need of depth replenishments.

They used some of that money to retain John Tavares and Matthew Knies, and with nearly $5 million left over, could have another move in store.

Cole Shelton of Heavy Sports proposed this deal:

Maple Leafs receive: F Mason McTavish

Ducks receive: F Max Domi, F Easton Cowan, 2028 3rd round pick

Toronto did acquire Nic Roy from Vegas, a heavy, reliable third-line center who should bring some much-needed sandpaper in the playoffs. The Maple Leafs also traded for Matias Maccelli, a young, talented winger who saw steady point production with the Arizona Coyotes and Utah Mammoth.

Adding McTavish, 22, who scored 22 goals and 52 points over 76 games for Anaheim last season, would give Toronto outstanding center depth and versatility. He would also help aggregate Marner's 102 points from 2024-25.

McTavish is also a restricted free agent, and the only way the Ducks would be compelled to trade him is if they can not work out a deal.

Cowan is a fantastic prospect and has torn up the OHL with the London Knights. Over his past two seasons and 100 games, the forward has 63 goals and 165 points. He would ease some of the McTavish loss, but it is always risky to forecast NHL production when you have some already at your disposal.

This is not a ludicrous proposal, but one that has few avenues to reality.
