The 2025 MLB All-Star Game fittingly ended in historic fashion.

With the game tied at 6 after nine innings, the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs to lead the National League to a win in the first-ever swing-off, receiving MVP honors for his herculean effort. The rule was implemented in 2022 and finally came into play this year.

This All-Star Game also featured the ABS system for the first time in Major League play, with Cal Raleigh calling the first successful challenge in the bottom of the first. There were three more challenges throughout the game, with Kyle Stowers unsuccessful in the bottom of the eighth.

Aside from the new format and experimenting with new technology, the game was as good as fans could have hoped for. Pete Alonso and Corbin Carroll hit home runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the NL a 6-0 lead, but the AL stormed back with six unanswered runs, tying the game on a dribbler by Steven Kwan in the top of the ninth. Aroldis Chapman locked it down in the bottom of the frame to send the game to its incredible conclusion.

The NL reclaimed the All-Star Game after losing it in 2024, but it was just its second win in the past 13 years. The decisions made by Aaron Boone and Dave Roberts as to who would hit in the swing-off are sure to be scrutinized until the regular season resumes on Friday.

MLB All-Star Game updates, highlights from 2025 AL vs. NL showcase

11:52 p.m. — Jonathan Aranda goes 0-3, and the NL wins the first All-Star Game swing-off! Three Schwarbombs were the difference.

11:49 p.m. — Randy Arozarena hits one home run for the AL. Kyle Schwarber hits THREE! The NL leads 4-3 heading into the final round.

11:43 p.m. — Brent Rooker leads off for the AL and hits two home runs. Kyle Stowers hits one for the NL. The AL leads 2-1 heading to round two.

11:37 p.m. — End bottom of ninth: We. Are. Tied. For the first time in All-Star Game history, the contest will be decided with a home run derby. Here are the rules:

  • 3 players from each team
  • 3 swings from each player
  • Teams alternate
  • Team with the most home runs wins the All-Star Game 

11:28 p.m. — End top of ninth: The AL scratches across two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Aroldis Chapman is coming on to try to keep it tied.

11:26 p.m. — Steven Kwan betas out an infield single! This game is tied!

11:23 p.m. — Olson makes a diving play on a ball down the line! A game-saving grab for the hometown player in the All-Star Game.

11:19 p.m. — Bobby Witt lines a double in the same spot! The AL has the tying run on second. The Mets' Edwin Diaz is coming into the game.

11:18 p.m. — Buxton lines a double to right, and the AL has the tying run coming to the plate.

11:13 p.m. — End of bottom of eight: An ABS challenge goes the umpire's way, as a low strike call is confirmed after the Marlins' Kyle Stowers challenges. This game heads to the ninth with the AL trailing by two. Padres closer Robert Suarez will try to get the final three outs.

11:02 p.m. — Eugenio Suarez gets hit on the hand by a pitch, but he stays in the game. The Diamondbacks third baseman and prime trade-deadline piece appears to be alright.

10:56 p.m. — End top of eighth: "The Miz" gives up a single but otherwise has a successful All-Star Game debut.

10:50 p.m. — Misiorowski is in the game for the NL. Players on both sides are up on the top railing to watch the young phenom.

10:46 p.m. — End bottom of seventh: Carlos Estevez gets Olson looking as the NL strands two. The AL is looking to complete the comeback in the late innings at the All-Star Game.

10:27 p.m. — NL 6, AL 4: Bobby Witt Jr. adds and RBI goundout in the top of the seventh.

10:25 p.m. — NL 6, AL 3: Brent Rooker crushes a three-run homer! The AL cuts the NL lead in half, as the Athletics designated hitter avenges a first round exit in yesterday's Home Run Derby.

10:08 p.m. — NL 6, AL 0: Corbin Carroll adds a solo shot! It's 6-0 NL in the bottom of the sixth.

10:01 p.m. — NL 5, AL 0: Pete Alonso cracks a three-run homer! He skipped the Home Run Derby, but makes up for it with an opposite field dinger to give the NL a five-run lead.

9:58 p.m. — Fernando Tatis Jr. swipes second, our first stolen base of the night.

9:47 p.m. — End bottom of fifth: Kyle Shwarber puts a charge into a ball, but it's caught by Byron Buxton in deep center field. The NL still leads 2-0. 

9:40 p.m. — End top of fifth: Jacob Wilson wins another ABS challenge, turning a strike into a ball, but the AL goes quietly.

9:01 p.m. — End bottom of second: Pete Crow-Armstrong laces a double into right field, but is stranded on second by Carlos Rodon.

8:51 p.m. — End top of second: Ryan O'Hearn strikes out as the AL goes 1-2-3 again.

8:47 p.m. — Kershaw fans Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and is removed by Dave Roberts. He gets a nice cheer from the crowd.

8:45 p.m. — Clayton Kershaw is in for Skenes. Left fielder Kyle Tucker makes a sliding catch in left field on the first pitch of the inning.

8:40 p.m. — End bottom of first: Skubal wins the first ABS challenge of the night to punch out Manny Machado. He then fans Will Smith to escape the jam.

8:37 p.m. — NL 2, AL 0: Ketel Marte lines a double down the right field line, plating Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr. A mic'd up Tarik Skubal is struggling in the early going.

8:30 p.m. — End top of first: Skenes fans Riley Greene and gets Judge to ground out for a 1-2-3 inning. He should get the top of the second as well.

8:27 p.m. — Skenes fans Torres with 100 mph high heat. Good luck touching that.

8:25 p.m. — Paul Skenes' first pitch to Gleyber Torres at 99 mph is fouled back, and we are underway.

8:00 p.m. — The starters are coming out of the dugout. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman get huge cheers from the Atlanta crowd.

7:50 p.m. — The reserves for each league are being introduced. Georgia native Byron Buxton and former Braves pitcher Max Fried get the loudest cheers for the AL. Current Braves Matt Olson and Chris Sale hear the most noise for the NL.

7:45 p.m. — The rain appears to have stopped, and the tarp removed from the field. It was just an isolated thunderstorm before the All-Star Game.

7:25 p.m. — It has started to rain in Atlanta, and the grounds crew is putting the tarp on the field.

7:10 p.m. — Just one hour until first pitch in Atlanta.

7:05 p.m. — Another name that's been in the headlines: Jacob Misiorowski. The rookie pitcher was selected for the All-Star Game after just five major league starts, but he's got the filthy stuff that fans love to watch. When will we see "The Miz" tonight?

6:55 p.m. — Here's a cool storyline for tonight: the starting center fielders were traded for one another back in 2021.
