Padres' Mike Shildt makes concerning Fernando Tatis Jr. injury announcement
The San Diego Padres avoided a four-game sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-3 win on Thursday night.
But things got ugly in the ninth. Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch, causing both benches to clear and both managers to get ejected. Then, Shohei Ohtani was hit by a pitch, which led Padres reliever Robert Suarez to be thrown out before the game came to an end with the bases loaded.
Tatis left the game after being hit by the pitch, and Mike Shildt revealed a concerning update after the game, per Annie Heilbrunn.
Shildt said Tatis' x-ray is negative but is "not in a good place." Shildt said they're trying to figure Tatis' injury out. Medical team said hit is in a "tough spot where there's a lot of bones" ... x-ray is negative but they will do more imaging tomorrow
That's certainly not what the Padres want to hear, especially with the way the offense has struggled lately.
Jackson Merrill is also on the IL after suffering a concussion, and the Padres losing Tatis' firepower and spark would be a tough blow to the team.
If Tatis is out for some time due to the hit by pitch, it will likely bleed this drama over in August when these two National League West rivals meet again.
