Phillies could soon swing blockbuster trade for 2-time All-Star on Rangers

The Philadelphia Phillies have a need in the outfield and may need to address it at the trade deadline. They could covet an All-Star on the Texas Rangers.

Outside of Nick Castellanos, none of the Phillies' outfielders have consistently performed at the plate. They currently have the National League East lead, but they seem poised to be engaged in a tight race with the New York Mets all year. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel made a list of trade candidates and linked the Phillies to Adolis García.

García was a key player for the Rangers in their 2023 World Series victory. He is a two-time All-Star, but is struggling this season. OnPattison's Tim Kelly suggested he could still be a fit on the Phillies.

"The thing about García is that while he has some experience in center field in his career, the two-time All-Star is really more of a corner outfielder. But he's a damn good one, having won a Gold Glove Award in 2023," wrote Kelly. "This year, he has 10 defensive runs saved and two outs above average in right field."

García is slashing .233/.285/.401 this year. He is not a power house offensively, but would be an upgrade over Max Kepler at the plate and in the field. He could take over in left field for the Phillies and help them make a deep run.

"If the Phillies landed García, it would presumably be to play left field. The 32-year-old doesn't have much experience in left field, but as Max Kepler has shown this year, if you can play a strong right field, typically you can get adjusted to left relatively easily," wrote Kelly. "Speaking of Kepler, he might be the odd-man-out if the Phillies acquire García. Kepler has played a strong left field, and has had some nice offensive moments. But he has a .691 OPS this year and is another lefty in a lineup that's too left-handed, so he shouldn't be someone that prevents you from upgrading if left field is the position you're able to do it in."

The Rangers are three games out of a wild card spot entering play on Tuesday. If they fall out of contention by July 31, they could be open to moving García, who will be a free agent after next season.
