Phillies predicted to acquire well-rounded 3B as potential Alec Bohm replacement

For the Philadelphia Phillies, third base is becoming an intriguing position beyond 2025.

Starter Alec Bohm heard his name in trade rumors all winter, but the Phillies decided they would be better off keeping him around. He's been serviceable this season and won't be replaced at the trade deadline, but entering his walk year, the trade rumors could return this winter.

At some point, the Bohm-Phillies partnership seems likely to draw to a close. And while they have some potential replacements lined up in the minor leagues, it wouldn't hurt to add an insurance policy with their 2025 first-round draft pick.

That's precisely what one baseball writer sees the Phillies doing.

On Tuesday, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted that the Phillies would select Great Oaks (Calif.) High School infielder/third baseman Gavin Fien with the 26th overall pick in next month's Major League Baseball Draft.

"The Phillies have taken a high school player with their first pick in each of the past five drafts, including a prep bat three years running, so Fien fits that organizational strategy here at the back of the first round," Reuter wrote.

"With a strong 6'3", 200-pound frame and average-or-better tools across the board, he is more physically mature than some of the other top high school bats. He was a star on the showcase circuit, and while he did not have the spring many were expecting, that won't negate what scouts saw last summer."

Fien earned an initial 50 grade on the 20-to-80 scale in his MLB Pipeline scouting report for every tool besides throwing, which earned him a 55. That well-rounded profile gives him a lot of pathways to earning playing time at the major league level.

Even if Fien doesn't become the direct successor to Bohm in Philadelphia, the 18-year-old should have a nice professional career ahead of him.
