Phillies-Rangers trade proposal brings two World Series champs to Philly
The Philadelphia Phillies' plans at the trade deadline are fairly straightforward.
Philadelphia's outfield has been subpar all season, and their bullpen has been lackluster at best. On the whole, they still have one of the best rosters in the sport, but fixing those two issues gives them the best shot at a coveted World Series title.
Could the Phillies address both needs in one trade? With their deep farm system, they might be able to grab a pair of rentals for someone like 23-year-old starter Mick Abel, or a pair of prospects slightly further down the food chain.
One insider thinks the Phillies should reach into their prospect coffers to go after a pair of Texas Rangers players, both of whom have rings from this decade.
On Friday, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer proposed a trade that would bring Rangers outfielder Adolis García and relief pitcher Chris Martin to the Phillies for pitching prospect Jean Cabrera and infield prospect Aroon Escobar.
"García isn’t far removed from averaging 30 homers over the last four seasons, including 39 in 2023. He smashed five homers in the ALCS that year, too. And he’s under control through next season," Lauber wrote.

"The Rangers could pair him in a deal with 39-year-old reliever Chris Martin, a World Series winner with the Braves in 2021, or former Phillies lefty Hoby Milner."
García, 32, is having a perplexing season, with an OPS under .700 for the second straight year after his heroic All-Star campaign in 2023. Yet, he's one of the best right field defenders in the game and still has light tower power.
Meanwhile, Martin owns a 2.49 ERA despite allowing three home runs in a row against the Baltimore Orioles earlier this week.
This would be an all-in move for the Phillies, and one they certainly could and should consider.
