PSG vs. Arsenal score: UEFA Champions League result, stats as Ruiz, Hakimi put Parisians in UCL final

Context:

PSG secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, advancing to the final with goals from Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi. Despite Arsenal's early pressure and Bukayo Saka's consolation goal, a missed opportunity by Saka later in the game was pivotal. PSG's midfield, particularly Ruiz, Joao Nevez, and Vitinha, controlled the match, with Gianluigi Donnarumma's stellar goalkeeping nullifying Arsenal's threats. Arsenal's initial vigor waned after Ruiz's goal, and they were unable to overcome the deficit from the first leg. PSG will face Inter Milan in the final, marking their second appearance in the club's history as they aim for their first European title.

Dive Deeper:

  • PSG, without Ousmane Dembele due to injury, relied on their midfield to dominate possession and control the match against Arsenal, eventually winning 2-1 and securing a place in the Champions League final with a 3-1 aggregate score.

  • Fabian Ruiz scored his first Champions League goal with a powerful strike, setting the tone for PSG, while Achraf Hakimi's goal later solidified their lead and showcased his skill as one of the world's top right-backs.

  • Arsenal showed promise in the opening stages, attempting to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, but their efforts were thwarted by the defensive prowess and goalkeeping excellence of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

  • Bukayo Saka scored a late goal for Arsenal, bringing temporary hope, but his earlier miss of an open goal highlighted Arsenal's missed opportunities and inability to capitalize on their chances.

  • PSG's tactical adjustments and the brilliance of their key players like Nevez and Vitinha, who executed a notable midfield performance, were crucial in overcoming Arsenal's challenge and securing the victory.

  • Inter Milan awaits PSG in the final, having defeated Barcelona in a thrilling aggregate score of 7-6, setting up an exciting matchup for the European title.

  • Arsenal's campaign ends without silverware, as Mikel Arteta's team fell short despite showing potential, particularly in the opening phases of the match against PSG.

  • It was far from as dramatic, thrilling, or rousing as Tuesday’s affair, but PSG will be more than happy with the result as goals from Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi sent the French giants into the Champions League final with a 2-1 win over Arsenal.

  • Bukayo Saka snatched a consolation goal to make things interesting down the stretch, but his glaring miss moments later caused more pain than the successful conversion soothed. A 3-1 aggregate loss sealed another trophy-less campaign for Mikel Arteta's men.

  • With Ousmane Dembele on the bench nursing a muscle concern, the delicious attacking flow PSG displayed at times this season was lacking, so they leaned on the brilliance of their midfielders to wrestle control of the match after a tough opening.

  • Ruiz’s thumping finish for a first career Champions League goal was the highlight, but Joao Nevez and Vitinha — notwithstanding a tame penalty failure form the latter during the second half —  were just as important to the Parc des Prince triumph. They contained Declan Rice and Thomas Partey, who never stopped trying to turn the tie in the Premier League club's favour.

  • Arsenal started brightly in an effort to turn the 1-0 first-leg deficit around, but faded after Ruiz’s goal rendered the mountain a much tougher climb. The few moments they threatened were negated by another world-class performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.

  • PSG return to the Champions League final for just the second time in club history, aiming for their first-ever European title. They will face Inter Milan, who stunned Barcelona at the San Siro, winning 7-6 on aggregate after extra-time in an instant classic.

PSG vs. Arsenal live updates, highlights from Champions League

    FULLTIME: PSG 2 (3-1) 1 Arsenal

  • PSG ARE INTO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL! Without Ousmane Dembele from the start, PSG turned to their midfield to carry them through, and that they did, controlling most of the match. Whatever their midfield could not clean up, Gianluigi Donnarumma was there to sweep up the mess, logging yet another absolutely stellar performance.

  • Arsenal gave it a real go, but their failure to capitalise on the strong opening 20 minutes will haunt them. After Fabian Ruiz's opening goal, it always felt like PSG were into the final. Even then, it would have been a completely different game if Bukayo Saka had converted his late miss, but he sailed it over the crossbar instead.

  • The Premier League side will rue what could have been, while PSG are off to Munich!

  • 86th min: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia picks up a yellow card for clashing needlessly with Riccardo Calafiori who tries to scramble to a loose ball out of touch. He'll be happy to have wasted a few extra seconds.

  • 80th min: Chance, Arsenal! OH NO BUKAYO HAS HAD A SHOCKING MISS! HE'S MISSED A WIDE OPEN GOAL FROM SEVEN YARDS OUT!!!! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR CHANCES IN THE GAME! OH DEAR OH DEAR!

  • A gorgeous cross from the left falls right to the young England international who had beaten his man on the run, but it comes in at such a pace that he can only try to redirect it on net with a single touch. With Donnarumma beaten by the delivery and the whole goal open, he sends it miles over the crossbar!

  • What a different game this is if that goes in the back of the net!

  • — The xG Philosophy (@xGPhilosophy) May 7, 2025 76th min: GOAL! ARSENAL! Bukayo Saka pulls one back for Arsenal! They surely couldn't reverse a 3-0 aggregate deficit inside the final 15 minutes, could they?

  • Leandro Trossard wins possession with a physical challenge on Marquinhos out wide, which PSG are upset about, and his deflected cutback falls instead at the feet of Bukayo Saka who beats his defender and the goalkeeper from four yards out!

  • 72nd min: GOAL! PSG! ACHRAF HAKIMI PROVES WHY HE'S THE WORLD'S BEST RIGHT-BACK! PSG ARE 3-0 UP ON AGGREGATE, AND THE TIE IS OVER!

  • Thomas Partey is far too lazy on the ball at the top of his own penalty area as Arsenal look to clean up a PSG move forward, and it's stolen right back by the hosts. Then all it takes is one touch to feed Hakimi in a central location, and he rifles a thunderous right-footed finish past David Raya to emphatically put PSG into the final for sure!

  • VIDEO: Watch Hakimi goal in USA | Watch in UK | Watch in Canada | Watch in Australia

  • 70th min: Here comes Ousmane Dembele for the final 20 minutes of the match, as Bradley Barcola has been withdrawn. Barcola missed his one good chance and has done little else on the counter.

  • Arsenal respond with Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard, who replace Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Martinelli.

  • 66th min: PENALTY, PSG! The referee goes to the monitor way after a potential penalty appeal, and out of nowhere awards PSG a penalty! A video review shows Myles Lewis-Skelly's hand just barely clipped the ball on a shot by Achraf Hakimi, but it's just INCREDIBLY harsh! Nobody had even noticed this contact but the VAR, and it had no bearing on the shot seeing as the contact was just a brush and nothing more!

  • Vitinha steps up, and...SAVED BY DAVID RAYA! Arsenal will feel that justice has been done! Raya holds his ground and Vitinha's cheeky penalty is weak! Raya saw it coming!

  • — ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) May 7, 2025 64th min: Chance, Arsenal! ANOTHER SENSATIONAL SAVE BY DONNARUMMA! HE'S HAVING A MASTERCLASS!

  • Bukayo Saka retrieves a deflected cross on the end line and recycles it back to the top-right corner of the penalty area. With few options available, he cuts onto his left and goes for the curler into the far corner, but the PSG goalkeeper dives and tips it away! It's another world-class stop, as he goes full stretch!

  • 55th min: PSG are happy to sit back and let Arsenal work, largely because the Gunners look as if they are beginning to tire. PSG have been more dangerous on the counter-attack so far than Arsenal have in possession.

  • Vitinha cooks two Arsenal defenders on the end line, which draws ooh's and ahh's from the crowd, but his floated cross is snatched out of the air by David Raya.

  • 2nd half kickoff: They're back under way in the French capital, with no changes for either side. What will Arsenal cook up for PSG to deal with, and how will Arsenal keep themselves in this matchup, knowing Ousmane Dembele's danger looms on the bench?

  • HALFTIME: PSG 1-0 Arsenal

  • Arsenal started so incredibly well, but Fabian Ruiz produced the moment of quality both sides were looking for and put the hosts 1-0 up against the run of play. From that point, Arsenal struggled to deal with the PSG counter-attack, and they themselves created much less than they had before the opener.

  • Mikel Arteta has 45 minutes to save Arsenal's European season, as they trail 1-0 today and 2-0 on aggregate! He has to find their early energy, or else they're going out!

  • 43rd min: Myles Lewis-Skelly takes a thunderous shot from Bradley Barcola right to the body, forcing the referee to stop play so the Arsenal full-back can regain his senses. A drop-ball restarts play.

  • 35th min: While both sides have been impressive in the final third creating chances, they have also both been sloppy in midfield. A chaotic game suits PSG far more than Arsenal, but down two goals, the Gunners are forced to play into their opponents' hands to create the biggest attacking threat. Giveaways by both sides are common in the middle of the pitch.

  • 30th min: Chance, PSG! BRADLEY BARCOLA IS STOPPED BY DAVID RAYA! It's a very poor finish from the PSG forward who gets clean through on the counter, as his eventual effort from 12 yards out is too close to the Arsenal goalkeeper, who snaps his body down to his left to palm it out of danger!

  • Give credit to Declan Rice as well, as he made a breathless full-field run to challenge Barcola's shot from behind!

  • — Football Tweet ⚽ (@Football__Tweet) May 7, 2025 27th min: GOAL! PSG! FABIAN RUIZ WITH A THUNDEROUS STRIKE! PSG GO TWO GOALS UP ON AGGREGATE!

  • Off the free-kick from Rice's foul, the initial clearance is headed only as far as Ruiz at the top of the penalty area, and he brilliantly chests it down and gives it a rip, hammering it low and hard past David Raya inside the right post! A goal of real skill and endeavor!

  • A night after 37-year-old Francesco Acerbi scored his first Champions League goal, so too does Fabian Ruiz!

  • VIDEO: Watch PSG goal in USA | Watch in UK | Watch in Canada | Watch in Australia

  • — ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) May 7, 2025 26th min: Declan Rice is shown a yellow card as he steps across Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and scissors him down to the ground. He claims to the official that he got the ball, but he um...definitely did not.

  • 23rd min: Chance, Arsenal! William Saliba gives the ball away in possession at the midway line, and Desire Doue snatches it, but as he steams towards goal, his eventual effort is poor as he threads it right to David Raya. A poor finish with a chance to punish Arsenal for a mistake!

  • 18th min: Nuno Mendes, PSG's defensive wizard out wide, is shown a yellow card after stepping on the foot of Jurrien Timber. It's a harsh booking so early, as the contact was quite minimal, even if it was surely a bit painful for the Arsenal man.

  • 17th min: Chance, PSG! It's been all Arsenal to this point, but PSG have their venom on the counter, proven here as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hits the woodwork!!!! It's a chance from nothing, but the Georgian star isn't closed down by Myles Lewis-Skelly well enough, so he cuts onto his right and whips a curler off the far post!

  • VIDEO: Watch Kvaratskhelia chance in UK | Watch in Australia

  • 8th min: Chance, Arsenal! ANOTHER BRILLIANT SAVE BY DONNARUMMA! It has been ALL Arsenal early on!

  • Arsenal go long from a throw and it falls to Martin Odegaard near the top of the penalty area, but the Italian is there to dive down to his left to make the save! He's down after the play, appearing to have injured himself in the process, but after a lengthy spell of treatment he's up and ready to continue. That will be something to watch...

  • — Football Tweet ⚽ (@Football__Tweet) May 7, 2025 4th min: Chance, Arsenal! WHAT A SAVE GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA! An outrageous stop to prevent Gabriel Martinelli from opening the scoring off a corner! The Brazilian met the cross right in the heart of the six-yard box, but his redirect is turned away by a fabulous reflex save!

  • 3rd min: Chance, Arsenal! Look out hosts! Declan Rice goes very close with an early header, meeting a cross from Jurrien Timber right in front of net, but despite out-jumping Marquinhos he puts it just wide left!

  • Kickoff: They're under way at Parc des Princes in Paris! A one-goal advantage for PSG is in effect, but Arsenal are still very much in this!

  • PSG vs. Arsenal: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: It's already looking like a thumping matchday atmosphere at Parc des Princes with still 15 minutes to go until the opening whistle! The PSG ultras always bring the energy. Kickoff is right around the corner!

  • — Simon Collings (@sr_collings) May 7, 2025 30 mins to kickoff: Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who retired from playing in 2022 and is currently the caretaker manager of Norwich City in the Championship, is on hand for this match in Paris for UK broadcaster TNT Sports, and believes Mikel Arteta has been tremendous as Arsenal boss.

  • — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) May 7, 2025 45 mins to kickoff: While Desire Doue carries the youth torch for a very young PSG side, Myles Lewis-Skelly is doing the same for Arsenal. The left-back has exploded onto the scene this year at just 18 years old, setting records at every turn. He will have his hands full with Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue, but not seeing Ousmane Dembele in the starting lineup must have been a sight for sore eyes.

  • — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) May 7, 2025 1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in, and they are exactly as expected, even down to Bradley Barcola in at the No. 9 for Ousmane Dembele, which was reported about 30 minutes prior to lineups being announced.

  • For Arsenal, Mikel Merino retakes his place at the striker position, with Thomas Partey back in midfield after his first-leg suspension.

  • 1 hour 15 mins to kick: According to analytics website WhoScored, Declan Rice is the highest rated midfielder in the Champions League this season. A lot of that has to do with Rice's incredible pair of free-kicks against Real Madrid. Yet according to Mikel Arteta, that wasn't even the plan for the set play.

  • Rice will be essential in stopping PSG's midfield buildup, which features a trio of passing wizards but lacks somewhat in physicality.

  • — Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) May 7, 2025 1 hour 30 mins to kick: With Lamine Yamal's Barcelona eliminated yesterday, the teenage mantle now falls at the feet of Desire Doue, who has been exceptional for PSG throughout the Champions League knockout stage. Can he lead PSG to the final with Ousmane Dembele only fit for a cameo?

  • — WhoScored (@WhoScored) May 7, 2025 1 hour 45 mins to kick: It was largely expected that Ousmane Dembele would be available to play tonight for PSG, and while he is...it seems there's a caveat. According to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport in France, Dembele has only made the bench for today's game.

  • — Fabrice Hawkins (@FabriceHawkins) May 7, 2025 2 hours to kickoff: Yesterday's win for Inter saw Yann Sommer produce an absolute masterclass, despite conceding three goals to Barcelona, one of the world's best all-out attacking sides.

  • Which goalkeeper today will earn their team a spot in the Champions League final? Sommer is the highest-rated keeper in the tournament so far of all players with at least eight appearances, while David Raya is fourth and Gianluigi Donnarumma is fifth. Both goalkeepers in today's game have been sensational!

    USA/Canada Wed, May 7 12 p.m. PT

PSG vs. Arsenal lineups, team news

Luis Enrique rotated his PSG squad heavily over the weekend against Strasbourg, so all his regular starters should return, including Ousmane Dembele. The Ballon d'Or candidate exited the first leg late with what looked to be a muscle injury, but after being kept out of the weekend's match as a precaution, should return to play here.

  • However, there's a catch. According to a report just before kickoff, Dembele will only make the bench to begin this match. While it's unconfirmed whether that's down to fitness or tactics, it's likely that the former is true. That means both Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue are included in the XI, with Barcola likely taking the No. 9 position.

  • Only oft-injured defender Presnel Kimpembe is confirmed as absent for PSG due to injury, this time a bone edema in his right foot. Lee Kang-in suffered a shin injury during the weekend defeat but is included amongst the substitutes as usual.

  • PSG starting lineup (4-3-3): Donnarumma (GK) — Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes — Nevez, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz — Doue, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia

  • PSG subs: Tenas (GK), Safonov (GK), Tape-Kobrissa, Beraldo, L. Hernandez, Mayulu, Zaire-Emery, Mbaye, Lee, Dembele, G. Ramos.

  • Without the suspended Thomas Partey in the first leg, Mikel Arteta moved Mikel Merino back to midfield and slotted in Leandro Trossard at striker, but the Belgian proved ineffective in that role. Here, with Partey back, the Ghana international should allow Declan Rice to operate in his natural position as a box-to-box No. 8. with Merino rejoining the forward line.

  • Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori have both returned to Arsenal training, meaning they are both available for selection. Timber retakes the starting right-back spot, moving Ben White to the bench along with Calafiori.

  • Long-term absentees GabrielGabriel JesusJorginhoTakehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz all remain out, although the latter has returned to training and is eyeing a return before the end of the season. Arteta confirmed over the weekend that Havertz "will have a chance to play a few games" before the campaign ends, but this game is too early for a spot on the bench.

  • Arsenal starting lineup (4-3-3): Raya (GK) — Timber, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly — Odegaard, Partey, Rice — Saka, Merino, Martinelli

  • Arsenal subs: Neto (GK), Setford (GK), White, Tierney, Zinchenko, Calafiori, Henry-Francis, Jorginho, Nwaneri, Trossard, Butler-Oyedeji, Sterling.
