Raiders reveal their plans for Julian Edelman-like rookie Tommy Mellott
Context:
The Las Vegas Raiders are enthusiastic about their sixth-round draft pick, Tommy Mellott, a standout quarterback from Montana State, whom they envision playing a versatile role similar to Julian Edelman. Brandon Yeargan, the Raiders' college scouting director, highlighted Mellott's potential contributions as a receiver, returner, cover player, and possibly quarterback. The comparison to Edelman stems from Mellott's quarterback background and the team's connection to Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders. In the same draft round, the Raiders also secured Cam Miller from North Dakota State as a long-term quarterback option. The team hopes Mellott can emulate even a fraction of Edelman's success, which would be a significant win for Las Vegas.
Dive Deeper:
Tommy Mellott was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the sixth round and is being compared to Julian Edelman due to his potential to play multiple roles, including receiver and returner, despite being a star quarterback at Montana State.
Brandon Yeargan, the Raiders' college scouting director, expressed confidence in Mellott's diverse skill set, indicating that the team sees him as a valuable asset across various positions, including special teams and possibly quarterback.
The Raiders' enthusiasm for Mellott is reminiscent of the narrative surrounding Tom Brady, a minority owner of the team, who was a late-round draft pick that exceeded expectations.
In addition to Mellott, the Raiders also drafted Cam Miller from North Dakota State, aiming to develop him as a long-term quarterback solution, two picks after Mellott.
The Raiders hope Mellott can achieve similar success to Julian Edelman, who transitioned from a college quarterback to a top NFL slot receiver, highlighting the importance of Mellott's adaptability and potential impact on the team.
If you listen to the Las Vegas Raiders talk, you'd think they got one of the best players in the draft in the sixth round.
Of course, that'd be a familiar narrative to the team's famous minority owner, Tom Brady.
But no, we're talking about Tommy Mellott, who was a star quarterback at the FCS level at Montana State.
The Raiders' college scouting director, Brandon Yeargan, spoke with the Las Vegas Review-Journal to lay out Mellott's expectations.
“I wouldn’t pigeonhole him right now,” Yeargan said. “I would say we view him as a receiver that’s going to have a lot of value in the kicking game, potentially as a returner, as a cover player, maybe play some quarterback, too. We’re looking really as an athlete/receiver, but he’s a unique guy.”

The Raiders also got a long-term quarterback in the sixth round, two picks after Mellott, with North Dakota State's Cam Miller.
Mellott has been compared to Julian Edelman, in part due to the Brady connection. Edelman was a college QB at Kent State before developing into one of the NFL's best slot receivers.
Even if Mellott is just a tiny bit of Edelman, he's a good pick for the Raiders.
And if he can get close to that level? Las Vegas would absolutely love it.
