Red Sox make decision on Walker Buehler losing rotation spot
The Boston Red Sox's starting rotation has struggled this season, outside of Garrett Crochet. Alex Cora spoke on the struggles of one of their starters and whether he would keep his job in the rotation.
The Red Sox signed Walker Buehler to a one-year, $21 million deal with a $25 million mutual option for next year. The Red Sox hoped he could build on his dominant postseason, but instead, he has posted a 6.29 ERA in 13 starts. Last night, he gave up five earned runs in four innings of work.
The Red Sox rotation has a 4.36 ERA. If not for Crochet, that number would be even worse. However, Cora seemingly confirmed that Buehler would stay in the rotation, according to MassLive's Sean McAdam.
"We’ll talk about it," said Cora when asked about Buehler retaining his spot, per McAdam. "But the second and third inning were really good. The velocity was up and the movement of the pitches were great. There’s some things he needs to do better, but he’ll be ready for the next one."
The Red Sox do not have many options, even if they wanted to remove Buehler from the rotation. Hunter Dobbins is on the injured list and Tanner Houck is still on his rehab assignment. Buehler knows he needs to pitch better, but the results simply have not been there.

"I think we can keep trying different things and looking at different stuff," said Buehler, per McAdam, "or this mix or that mix and at the end of the day, if you don’t execute and throw strikes, you really don’t have a chance.
"I feel like a broken record. It’s embarrassing. It’s just not who I want to be as a baseball player. Obviously, I’d rather get whacked around than do that. Somehow this year, I’ve managed to do all the negative things you can. We’ll keep working, but obviously, it’s just tough to let down our team."
