Red Sox trade idea would ship Connor Wong to AL East rival
The Boston Red Sox have not lived up to expectations this year. However, they are still within striking distance of a wild card spot. They could operate with the future in mind at the trade deadline.
While the Red Sox have a chance to make the postseason, they could still try to trade away some big leaguers in order to prepare for the future, while also trying to turn things around this year. The returns of Alex Bregman and Masataka Yoshida could be huge boosts for the team. The Red Sox have a few players who could draw interest if they decide to move on.
Aroldis Chapman would likely have interest from every contender. However, FanSided's Zach Pressnell suggested the Red Sox could trade Connor Wong to the Toronto Blue Jays, who are reportedly in the market for a catcher.
"The Toronto Blue Jays, who have won the AL East just once since 1993, have the entire country of Canada in a frenzy after finishing off a four-game sweep of the Yankees for the first time in franchise history, and moving into first place," USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote. "Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins also boldly stated that the Blue Jays will be ultra-aggressive at the trade deadline, seeking a starter and a catcher."
Wong has made just 25 starts this year. While trades within the division are rare, the Red Sox could take advantage of the Blue Jays' need. Alejandro Kirk has been fine for the team, but Wong would be depth for them.

"The Red Sox have Carlos Narvaez emerging as one of the better young catchers in the game, which makes Wong expendable," wrote Pressnell. "Since Wong would come with some team control on his contract, the Red Sox could target a prospect return centered around somebody like Jake Bloss. After all, it was just last year that Wong was authoring a perfectly respectable season both at and behind the plate."
