Spurs vs. Timberwolves final score, results: San Antonio trounces Minnesota, advances to first WCF since 2017

The five showdowns between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the regular season, which included plenty of tension, left many fans with a hunger for a seven-game playoff series between the two contrasting, yet elite teams. Thanks to the Spurs' rout of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, that dream matchup will become a reality.

After getting a dominant performance in Game 5 from Victor Wembanyama to take a 3-2 series lead, San Antonio was in full force in Game 6 on the road, coasting to a 139-109 victory to send Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves into their offseason. Even without Wembanyama stuffing the stat sheet, Minnesota had no answers for the Spurs' offense — and specifically their guard rotation, with Stephon Castle going for 32 points, and De'Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper combining for another 36.

Quieting the Target Center crowd, the Spurs claimed all momentum early, fended off a few Timberwolves runs and held Edwards (9-of-26 shooting) to poor efficiency to close out the second-round series. With Castle, Fox and Harper running in transition and connecting on threes, Friday's version of the Spurs looked like absolute title contenders and the kind of team that could certainly "upset" the defending champions next round after also beating the Thunder four times in the regular season.

In the first playoff run for many Spurs, including Wembanyama, Castle, Harper and head coach Mitch Johnson, the team has returned to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017. San Antonio now gets its shot to make real noise — a high-stakes matchup with the NBA's potential budding dynasty awaits.

The Sporting News tracked live updates and highlights as the Spurs took down the Timberwolves in Friday's Game 6 elimination matchup. Here's how San Antonio cruised to claim a 4-2 series win.

Spurs vs. Timberwolves updates, highlights from Game 6 of NBA playoffs

All times Eastern.

Final: Spurs 139, Timberwolves 109

12:14 a.m. — For the first time in nine years, the Spurs will play for a spot in the NBA Finals. Even without much of a stat-stuffing night from Wembanyama, San Antonio was a force in Game 6, holding Anthony Edwards to 9-of-26 shooting with Minnesota lacking offensive punch elsewhere.

De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle shine as the Spurs eliminate the Timberwolves, and they will take on the Thunder soon.

12:08 a.m. — This game has gotten out of hand enough that Edwards was seen during a timeout with eight minutes remaining making his way over to the Spurs' bench, offering his congratulations on their victory as he checked out for the final time.

Meanwhile, Castle passed Luka Doncic to become the youngest player in NBA history with 30 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 threes in a game, regardless of the playoffs, per Jared Weiss.

11:58 p.m. — Make it a 30-point lead for the Spurs, their largest of the night. Edwards' efficiency has struggled, and we are nine minutes from a long-awaited OKC-San Antonio matchup with a Finals bid on the line.

End of third quarter: Spurs 110, Timberwolves 84

11:43 p.m. —  The Spurs are cooking, and they appear conference finals bound. It's now a 23-point advantage, with Edwards not finding his first points of the second half until the 2-minute mark of the third quarter. Minnesota simply hasn't had the offensive firepower to match San Antonio tonight.

11:33 p.m. — Castle is up to 28 points in Game 6, and the Spurs' lead is at 21. All of the energy has been taken out of Target Center.

11:24 p.m. — The Spurs open the second half on an 8-2 run, extending their lead to keep the Minnesota crowd silent.

Halftime: Spurs 74, Timberwolves 61

11:01 p.m. — Reid adds a bucket right before the halftime buzzer that makes it a 13-point deficit for Minnesota, which isn't nearly indicative of how in control the Spurs looked at one point. The Timberwolves have a fighting chance, with Edwards and Reid enjoying nice second quarters; the challenge for Minensota will be slowing a Spurs offense that is shooting 60% from the floor.

Should San Antonio hold on, it will be WCF bound. But Minnesota is emptying the tank, showing some fight in Game 6.

10:52 p.m. — Here come the Timberwolves. They've pulled within 13 ahead of halftime, with Edwards coming alive to reach 16 points, a total matched by Naz Reid, who has three 3-pointers. The crowd is awake in Minnesota, but the Wolves still have a deficit to overcome.

10:45 p.m. — Castle, Wembanyama and Fox are all into double-figure scoring, while Anthony Edwards has shot just 3-of-10 from the floor so far.

10:39 p.m. — The lead has ballooned to 24 for the Spurs. Wembanyama is now cruising, up to 11 points, and barring a massive blown lead, he's poised to lead his team to the Western Conference Finals.

10:24 p.m. — The Spurs are not messing around in Game 6 with a chance to close the series. Wembanyama punctuates a 7-0 run to open the second quarter with an and-one fastbreak dunk and another easy finish to follow.

It's already a 16-point Spurs lead.

End of first quarter: Spurs 36, Spurs 27

10:15 p.m. — The Spurs continue to pull away at the end of the first quarter, with Castle being red-hot. He's made five of his first six shots, including three from deep, to give his team a nine-point boost after one quarter.

10:05 p.m. — The Spurs are hot tonight, but the Timberwolves are fighting with their backs against the wall. Naz Reid connects on a 3-pointer after a few deflections and a shot fake to fire up the home crowd, cutting the Spurs' lead to five. Castle, however, is already at 11 points.

9:52 p.m. — It's a fantastic start for San Antonio, opening on a 12-4 run. Fox and Stephon Castle each pour in a quick five points, while Wembanyama's defensive presence is already being felt.

9:50 p.m. — De'Aaron Fox opens the scoring in Minnesota with a 3-pointer, getting the Spurs going.

9:42 p.m. — The Pistons have forced Game 7, meaning it's time for the second game of the evening. Can the Timberwolves follow suit?

9:14 p.m. — Here are the Game 6 starters:

8:33 p.m. — At this point, every new playoff game can be considered arguably the most critical of Victor Wembanyama's young career. Stakes are certainly as high as ever tonight, as he can lead San Antonio to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017.
