Steelers named top landing spot for $100 million Pro Bowl wide receiver
The Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off training camp in under a month, and the team still has a glaring need at wide receiver.
Since trading away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers have lacked an effective boundary playmaker to pair with DK Metcalf. That must change if Pittsburgh wants Aaron Rodgers to have success in his final NFL season in 2025.
One of the top remaining wide receiver options the Steelers could target is Amari Cooper, who is still a free agent. Pittsburgh topped SportsCasting's Dan Girolamo's list of potential landing spots for Cooper.
Outside of Metcalf, the Steelers’ receiving corps is average at best. Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek will be in the running for snaps. If Cooper signs with the Steelers, he’d immediately be in the mix to be the No. 2 receiver behind Metcalf.
Cooper had the worst year of his career in 2024, as he posted career lows in catches (44), yards (547), and touchdowns (4) and struggled to find a consistent role in the Buffalo Bills' offense after being traded there during the trade deadline from the Cleveland Browns.
Though Cooper was ineffective last year, the Alabama product is just two years removed from an outstanding 2023 campaign with the Browns, where he totaled a career-high 1,250 yards.
Pairing Metcalf with Cooper would give the Steelers' offense an experienced and versatile receiver duo. The pair would also take some pressure off Rodgers, who will turn 41 in December and is no longer in a position to elevate those around him.
Signing Cooper shouldn't be too expensive, and Pittsburgh still has $18.6 million in cap space. So adding the five-time Pro Bowler to replace Pickens would be a logical move from general manager Omar Khan.
