Third time's the charm: Astros and Hector Neris reunite

Back again! The Astros and RP Hector Neris agreed to a contract on Saturday, July 5th. The recently released reliever returns to Houston for his third stint as an Astro! Neris is known for his sinker and clubhouse energy.

Neris played a key role in the historic 2022 Astros bullpen. Neris posted a 3.72 ERA in 65 innings; however, Neris flipped the switch for the postseason, posting a record of 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50 and nine strikeouts in eight appearances. Neris played a pivotal role in helping the Astros win their second World Series title. known for his sinker and clubhouse energy.

Following a strong 2023 campaign with the Astros, where Neris posted a career-best 1.71 ERA in 68 innings, he signed a deal to join the Chicago Cubs. However, Neris was ultimately released in August, leading to his first return to Houston.

Neris signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves on March 3rd. After being called up, Neris pitched one inning, allowing five earned runs and striking out one. He was designated for assignment the following day.

Neris then inked another minor league deal, this time with the Los Angeles Angels. Neris posted fourteen innings, allowing eight earned runs, and picking up 19 strikeouts. At the end of June, Neris was designated for assignment and then released by the Angels.

Just a few days later, Neris was offered a major league deal that would bring him back to the place he loves, Houston. Neris has pitched in two games for the Astros, both against the Guardians, posting two innings pitched, one hit allowed, and three strikeouts. Neris looks to build off a strong start back in Houston and looks to try to become another strong leverage guy in a strong Houston bullpen.
