Tigers trade proposal lands $70 million Rockies All-Star infielder

One of the top needs for the Detroit Tigers at the MLB trade deadline is to figure out their left side of the infield. Whether it's adding a shortstop or a third baseman, the Tigers need to make an addition at one of those two spots. Fortunately for the Tigers, there is a great option that is likely to be available.

In an article from Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report, the Tigers are called on to add an infielder at third base or shortstop. The name Kelly mentions as a strong candidate to fill that need is Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.

If the Tigers were to acquire McMahon, it likely would cost a decent bit. McMahon is under contract through the 2027 season, and has salaries of $12 million in 2025 and $16 million in 2026 and 2027. Detroit would have two and a half seasons of McMahon if they acquired him at this trade deadline.

With the Rockies firmly out of the postseason hunt, they would be open to trading McMahon. The 2024 All-Star third baseman has once again been playing well in 2025. Through the first 76 games of the season, McMahon has 1.6 WAR, which is on pace to be the second-best season of his career.

In 2025, McMahon has 266 at-bats. Through those at-bats, McMahon has 59 hits, 32 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 25 RBIs, 41 walks, and 95 strikeouts. His .222 batting average isn't the best, as is his .737 OPS.

But for the Tigers, it'd be a major upgrade over their current left side of the infield. Zack McKinstry could slide over to shortstop, while Trey Sweeney, with his sub-600 OPS, could be demoted to Triple-A to find his swing again.

McMahon has manned the Rockies' hot corner for a while now, and after being in trade rumors for a couple of years, could finally be on the move. The Tigers, with a need at third and the means to acquire McMahon, are the perfect fit for the Rockies' third baseman.
