Tom Holland brings top talent and celebrities to rising sport of 'padel'

The actor who is best known for his portrayal of Spider Man in the Marvel movies spun a web of competition and media attention to the rising sport of “padel” this week in London. Actor Tom Holland hosted the first-ever BERO Padel Classic. It’s a pro-am tournament that gave American sports fans a better look at one of Europe’s fastest growing sports.

Padel is a doubles racket sport often described as a mix of tennis and squash. You play it on a smaller court with walls that are designed to keep the ball and the players in action. The set up creates long strategic rallies. It’s still relatively new in the U.S. but it has exploded all over Europe and Latin America, with professional athletes and celebrities showing interest.

Holland helped organize the one-day tournament at London’s Padel Social Club. The event featured current World No. 1 Arturo Coello, along with several other elite padel players. On the celebrity side, competitors included rapper Stormzy, former tennis star Andy Murray, influencer Jay Shetty, and content creator Juanpa Zurita.

While Holland didn’t compete, he was active in the stands and courtside throughout the day, bringing energy and visibility to a sport he’s been supporting in recent months. The sport is known for its fast pace and it provided plenty of moments for the highlight reel.

The team of Charlie Pragnell and Juanpa Zurita won the tournament, edging out Jay Shetty and Rafa Vega in the final. Spectators and participants were treated to a high-level showcase of padel’s appeal — a blend of quick reactions, communication, and creative shots that keeps matches exciting from start to finish.

Off the court, the event drew interest for its mix of athletic talent and cultural figures, signaling padel’s move into the global spotlight. While pickleball has taken off in the U.S., padel may not be far behind as more players and fans catch on to its unique style.

Holland’s involvement added star power, but the athletes on the court made the strongest case — padel is here, and it’s a tough sport that’s starting to get some real attention.
