Trade pitch sees Blue Jays landing $77m star pitcher in 4-player deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have been a surprise this Major League Baseball season as they are atop the AL East at the All-Star break.
With the Blue Jays atop the division, Toronto will likely be aggressive ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. One area of need is pitching, and MLB analyst Baron Dionis of JaysJournal proposed a four-player deal that would see the Blue Jays acquire Mitch Keller from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Blue Jays acquire:
- Mitch Keller
Pirates acquire:
- Orelivis Martinez
- Joey Loperfido
- Paxton Schultz
The deal would see Toronto acquire Keller, who would be a solid No. 2 starter, for three players who could all make the Pirates’ MLB roster right now.

“This package of Martinez, Loperfido, and Schultz may be able to land Keller. That would be a big hit to the 40-man roster, but to land Keller, that is likely what it would cost. Toronto could easily replace these guys, though, and it is definitely worth it. Ross Atkins, cook something like this up to stack this rotation,” Dionis wrote.
Keller would add another arm to the Blue Jays' rotation, which is needed. He has three more years after this season on his five-year, $77 million deal, so he’d be a big part of the rotation for years to come. Keller is 3-10 with a 3.48 ERA in 20 starts this season.
As for the return, Martinez used to be a top prospect, but he has struggled in Triple-A. But the Pirates would take a flyer on him. Loperfido, meanwhile, can start in the outfield for Pittsburgh while Schultz is a good bullpen arm.
