Trey Hendrickson contract update offers specific deadline for Bengals decision
While there appears to be no end in sight for the ugly contract situation between the Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson, one NFL insider believes there may be a specific timeline for some sort of movement.
Hendrickson and the Bengals have been in contract talks since last year, but the two sides have been incapable of coming to an agreement.
And, things seem to be going horribly, as Hendrickson has called out the Bengals on multiple occasions this offseason over his frustration with the situation, and namely the lack of communication.
While Hendrickson eventually caved in 2024, it doesn't appear he's going to do that this time around. In fact, the four-time Pro Bowler has said he won't play on his current deal.
So, when we can expect a resolution?
Well, there is no guarantee when that will happen, but Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer thinks it could be mandatory minicamp, which runs from June 10-12.
"The Trey Hendrickson thing needs deadlines to create movement, and I do think the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp, set for June 10–12, is one to keep an eye on," Breer wrote.
Hendrickson has been in attendance at some points during OTAs, although he is not taking part. It'll be interesting to see if he attends mandatory minicamp later this month, although there is no way he actually takes part.
In his many comments on the contract saga with the Bengals, Hendrickson revealed that Cincinnati actually sent him a letter stating he would be fined if he didn't show for mandatory minicamp, something that did not sit well with him and certainly didn't help the relationship with such a key player.
"We've tried to keep it as least amount as personal as possible, but at some point in this process it's becomes personal," Hendrickson said. "Being sent 30 days before mandatory camp, or how many ever days it is, that if I don't show up I will be fined alludes to the fact that something won't get done in that time frame."
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the Bengals offered Hendrickson a deal that pays him roughly $28 million per year, but the star edge rusher clearly isn't happy with that amount.
It stands to reason that Hendrickson, who has the most sacks in the NFL the past two years and led the league in that category in 2024, wants somewhere between Maxx Crosby's $35.5 million annually and Myles Garrett's $40 million.
With how far apart the two sides seem to be, it wouldn't be surprising to see the veteran traded at some point, which would be a terrible decision by a Cincinnati team that desperately needs Hendrickson for 2025.
