The second round of the 2025 U.S. Open somehow proved more difficult than the first.

Before a rain stoppage that left 13 players out on the course, only three players finished the round at under-par for the tournament. On the other hand, many big names couldn't figure out Oakmont and will be sent home early.

The big winner from Friday is Sam Burns, who shot a 65 early Friday morning. He set himself up at -3 before other players at or near the lead faltered in the afternoon. Burns is in the solo lead entering the third round in what is his best chance to win a major.

J.J. Spaun, who led after Thursday, had a tougher day on Friday but is still at -2 for the event. Viktor Hovland has been inconsistent, but he is just two-back of Burns for the lead, rounding out the players currently under par.

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Justin Thomas are among the big names who didn't make it to Saturday. Rory McIlroy flirted with the cut line but survived, and Scottie Scheffler is lingering at +4.

Round 3

8:35 a.m.: Round 3 is officially set to begin at 9:12 a.m., with Philip Barbaree Jr. the first to the tee box to kick off this weekend's play at Oakmont. 

Round 2

7:56 a.m.: Round 2 is officially in the books, with the field set for the weekend. 

7 a.m.: Round 2 will pick up action at 7:30 a.m., with a handful of golfers needing to finish their second round. 

8:20 p.m.: The horn sounds due to rain, and 13 players will have to finish their second round on Saturday morning.

7:36 p.m.: Phil Mickelson doubled two of his last four holes to fall to +8, ending his tournament and perhaps his U.S. Open career.

7:20 p.m.: 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick also birdied his final hole to keep him alive for the weekend.

7:00 p.m. — McIlroy makes a birdie on 18 to get to +6, and he will make the cut after spending most of the tournament on the wrong side.

6:55 p.m. — Bryson DeChambeau's quest for back-to-back U.S. Opens ends as he shoots a +10 for the first two rounds.

6:29 p.m. — On his first hole as a co-leader, Thomas Detry four-putts to drop out of the lead. Elsewhere, J.J. Spaun closes his day with a bogey and is in at -2.

6:13 p.m. — Rory McIlroy's second birdie of the day gets him to +7, which is closer the cut line as he fights to remain in the tournament.

6:08 p.m. — A major shakeup on the leaderboard as Spaun and Thomas Detry birdie to get to-3, while Lawrence falls back to -2. Burns, Spaun and Detry are now tied for the lead.

5:51 p.m. — Lawrence and Spaun swap places after Lawrence hits a beautiful second shot inches from the hole.

5:46 p.m. — Bryson DeChambeau double-bogeys to move to +8, which is on the wrong side of the cut line. The reigning champion will need some late magic to play this weekend.

5:28 p.m. — Thriston Lawrence has four bogeys in his last five holes, and he has fallen down to -2 and tied for third.

5:15 p.m. — Phil Mickelson collects a birdie to get to +4 on the tournament, as it seems like he will stick around for the weekend.

4:50 p.m. — U.S. Junior Amateur champion Trevor Gutschewski has an Oakmont experience, hitting the ball between two bunkers and somehow making par. 

4:20 p.m. —  Rory McIlroy is flirting with the +7 cut line with 9 holes to play. The 2025 Masters winner has two double-bogeys today.

4:10 p.m. —Adam Scott gets back to even par with a long, winding putt. He's now tied for seventh.

3:59 p.m. — An eagle for Thomas Detry on Hole 14 pulls him closer to the leaders, now even through six holes today.

3:45 p.m. — Your new leader on Day 2: Thriston Lawrence. With two birdies on his first three holes, he's five-under for the major, passing Spaun.

3:26 p.m. — Sam Burns, who shot a 65 in Round 2 today and ranks among the leaders, reflects the same sentiment many other stars have: Oakmont is a challenge.

"There's no, kind of, 'gimme' hole. There's no hole where you can just kind of get up there and just hit it and not really pay attention to what you're trying to do," Burns said. "Every shot is difficult."

3:13 p.m. — Thriston Lawrence has teed off and birdies on his second hole of the day, putting him in a tie at the top of the leaderboard.

2:28 p.m. — Spaun is back in the lead following a birdie on Hole 4.

2:02 p.m. — A J.J. Spaun bogey on Hole 3 means there's now a three-way tie at the top between him, Burns and Lawrence, who tees off at 2:20 p.m.

2:01 p.m. — Ben Griffin becomes the next name to enter the top-5 today as the leaderboard continues shuffling. 

2:00 p.m. — It hasn't been Rory McIlroy's tournament so far, shooting six-over and below the projected cut line of +5.

1:28 p.m. — Sam Burns finished Round 2 shooting -5, making him tied for second after concluding his second day. He's one of just 12 players to ever shoot 65 or better in a round at Oakmont during the U.S. Open.

12:52 p.m. — Add Jon Rahm to the list of stars that are vocally expressing their frustrations with Oakmont.

12:03 p.m. — Sam Burns is on an absolute roll. He's up to six birdies in Round 2 vs. one bogey, shooting five-under for the day and three-under overall. Burns is tied with Lawrence for second.

12:02 p.m. — Brooks Koepka spent some time at the top of the leaderboard prior to three bogies over four holes, but with a nice shot in a par-3 6th hole, he's back to even for the tournament. 

11:47 a.m. — It's an ace for Victor Perez! He celebrates with a chest-bump after recording just the second-ever hole-in-one at a U.S. Open at Oakmont. 

11:38 a.m. — While Hovland has dropped back to -1, Tyrell Hatton moves closer to even with an eagle on Hole 12.

11:14 a.m. — It's rare to see (or hear) Scottie Scheffler get frustrated, but he let out a "Dang it!" while slamming his club. He's sitting at four-over.

10:47 a.m. — Hovland continues his upward trend in Round 2 with a birdie on Hole 1. He continues to flirt with the lead.

10:18 a.m. — Sam Burns is another player off to a great Friday. Consecutive birdies to close out the back nine move him to -2, getting under par and within reach of the top of the leaderboard. Both Hovland and Burns are four-under so far in Round 2.

9:59 a.m. — Hole 17 is treating players nicely right now. Viktor Hovland cards an eagle on a hole-out to continue his strong first half today and tie Lawrence on the leaderboard at -3. Hovland is -4 in Round 2, while a bogey from Koepka on Hole 18 dropped him to T-4. 

9:46 a.m. — Brooks Koepka connects on a nice chip-in on Hole 17 for birdie, a huge shot that moves him to three-under. He's now tied for second and within one shot of the lead after eight holes today.

9:42 a.m. — Sungjae Im is back at par after a strong Round 1, bogeying on Holes 2 and 5 to begin Day 2. He falls out of the top-5 on the leaderboard in the process.

8:45 a.m. — We had heard all week about how tough Oakmont is. Justin Thomas found that out first hand when his par attempt from a few feet out on No. 12 quickly turned into a double bogey. 

8:25 a.m. — The overgrown rough got a lot of negative publicity leading up to the U.S. Open and it ended up being cut down. Still, with a high rough and fast greens, Viktor Hovland decided he'd rather try putting from the second cut, and it worked. 

8:10 a.m. — It's barely past 8 am on the East Coast, but the action has already begun at Oakmont. Scottie opened his second day of play with a birdie on hole No. 1.

Round 1

8:05 p.m. — As the action winds down, Tony Finau saves par in wild fashion after hitting a sprinkler head and landing in the grandstands.

7:30 p.m. — Neergaard-Peterson drops another shot after bogeying 16, and he's now at -1 on the day.

7:12 p.m. — Despite his albatross, Patrick Reed is in the clubhouse at +3, largely thanks to a triple-bogey on the final hole.

7:11 p.m. — Rasmus Neergaard-Peterson had remained consistent on the back nine with five straight pars, but he bogeys 15 to drop to -2.

6:40 p.m. — Im bogeys his 17th hole, making his third bogey in the last six holes to drop to -2 for the day.

6:25 p.m. — Koepka birdies his last two holes of the day to cap off a -2 performance, putting him at tied for fifth.

6:07 p.m. — The top of the leaderboard is starting to go backwards as Burns, Rahm and Cam Young have all dropped out of the top five.

5:45 p.m. — Sam Burns' putter is hot as he has made his way up the leaderboard, now just one back of Spaun for the lead.

5:28 p.m. — Jon Rahm is making his way up the board as he completes a birdie and an eagle on back-to-back holes to get to -2.

5:19 p.m. — Im immediately bogeys his next hole, falling back into a tie for first with J.J. Spaun.

4:56 p.m. — Im drains a second-straight birdie putt and he is now in solo lead at the U.S. Open.

4:39 p.m. — Sungjae Im makes a birdie on his tenth hole to get him into a tie for the lead, joining Spaun at the top of the leaderboard.

4:27 p.m. — Patrick Reed has some trouble getting out of the rough at nine, which leads to a bogey that drops him a shot down to -1.

4:05 p.m. — Jordan Spieth now has two birdies in a row to get back to under par for the day.

3:35 p.m. — Rasmus Neergaard-Peterson eagles the fourth hole to get to -3 and into an early tie for second place.

3:00 p.m. — Sam Burns is percolating. He's at 3-under through five, placing him one stroke from the lead. Three birdies will do that for you.

2:45 p.m. — Patrick Reed makes history on the green, recording the fourth albatross in tournament history. For those keeping track, an albatross refers to a golfer finding their target on the second stroke of a par-5.

2:05 p.m. — Thriston Lawrence sits one stroke off Spaun's lead after sinking his third birdie of the back-nine.

1:35 p.m. — The afternoon session is underway. And birdies have started to flourish — Bud Cauley, Scottie Scheffler and J.T. Poston all fired off successful efforts to kick off their days.

1:15 p.m. — A tough finish for McIlroy, who saw his impressive score turn to ashes amid a flurry of back-nine bogeys. He sits at 4-over with one hole remaining in the round.

1:00 p.m. — Trailing Spaun in the rankings — only slightly — is Korean star Si Woo Kim. He's not quite faultless; he rattled a bogey home at No. 14. But at 3-under with two holes remaining, Kim has looked better than most atop Oakmont's serpent-like surface.

12:50 p.m. — Spaun ends his day with yet another par, his ninth in as many back-nine holes. What a showing for the Los Angeles native, who well walk into the clubhouse with sole possession of the lead. He also tied Andrew Landry with the best opening round score in U.S. Open history at Oakmont.

12:45 p.m.  — Just seven players are sitting at even or better so far. The sorceress is hexing the vast majority of those who have trotted onto its wicked surface.

12:30 p.m. — To contextualize Spaun's display thus far, here's a look at the greatest first-round showings in Oakmont's U.S. Open history. 

12:10 p.m. — Amateurs past and present are finding a rhythm on the daunting course; Spaniard Jose Luis Ballester put home a delicate putt form 87 yards out to record a birdie. Evan Beck followed him up with a canary of his own, dropping an inch-perfect chip to collect his first-ever U.S. Open birdie.

11:50 a.m. — Spaun's scorecard might be unspectacular in the back nine. But he's been efficient; he has seven straight pars, keeping his tally level at 4-under.

11:30 a.m. — The par-5s are causing a bit of trouble to some of the tournament's big-name performers. Defending U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau had to save a bogey on No. 12 while McIlroy whipped an effort in from distance to prevent too crooked of a number on No. 4

11:15 a.m. — Lowry is having quite the interesting day. He continues his volatile streak by sinking an eagle 2 on No. 3. He becomes the first golfer to ever accomplish such a feat.

10:45 a.m. — Spaun has continued his ascent up the leaderboard, although he's relied on a steady approach in the back half thus far. He still sits at 4-under through 13, rattling four pars to kick off his back nine.

10:15 a.m. — Not ideal from Shane Lowry. The Irishman was unable to emerge from that harrowing Poa annua bluegrass.

Fortunately for him, Lowry found a way to overcome his early toils on No. 17 and save par.

9:45 a.m. — Strange day thus far for Adam Scott, who sits at 2-under despite rattling off three bogeys.

9:15 a.m. — So far, so good for Spaun, who is down to 4-under after canning a quartet of birdies in the front nine.

8:44 a.m. — Make that two birdies in three holes for McIlroy. He and J.J. Spaun are the only players at 2-under early on, even with the conditions ideal so far. 

8:35 a.m. — Rory McIlroy is off to a hot start...

8:20 a.m. — Ludvig Aberg, among the pre-tournament favorites, started his day with back-to-back birdies before a bogey dropped him back to 1-over.

The 2025 U.S. Open will air exclusively under the NBC banner. The first two rounds of action can be found on USA Network, while Rounds 3 and 4 will be broadcast largely on NBC, with a partial broadcast being offered on USA Network at the start of Round 4.

Mike Tirico will lead the proceedings as the event's host and one of the program's lead play-by-play announcers..
