What happened to Denny Hamlin? Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 11 Toyota catches fire, withdraws from NASCAR race
Denny Hamlin's participation in the 2025 Wurth 400 ended prematurely when his No. 11 Toyota caught fire during the first stage of the race, forcing him to withdraw despite having the fourth-best odds to win. Before the incident, Hamlin had qualified in eighth place and had moved up to the top five, but the decision not to pit following a caution may have contributed to the car's failure. The fire erupted unexpectedly, resembling a video game turbo boost, and although Hamlin safely exited the vehicle, his chance of victory was over. Known for his polarizing presence, Hamlin also stirred local rivalries by performing the 'Horns Down' gesture, a taunt directed at Texas fans during his driver introduction. Despite the setback, Hamlin remained a strong contender in the NASCAR standings, holding third place before the race and boasting a net worth of $65 million at the end of 2024 due to successful sponsorships and race finishes.
Denny Hamlin's car caught fire during the first stage of the 2025 Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, leading to his withdrawal despite starting the race with strong odds and in a promising position.
After qualifying in eighth place, Hamlin advanced to the top five but chose not to pit after a caution, which may have contributed to the subsequent mechanical failure that caused the fire.
The fire erupted dramatically with flames shooting from the sides of the car, reminiscent of turbo boosts in racing video games, but Hamlin managed to exit the vehicle safely without injury.
Hamlin, a seasoned and often controversial driver, further stirred local rivalries by mocking Texas fans with the 'Horns Down' gesture during his introduction, a move that references a well-known sports rivalry with Oklahoma.
Prior to the race, Hamlin was third in the NASCAR playoff standings and had recently secured victories in the Cook Out 400 and Goodyear 400, showcasing consistent performance throughout the season.
Despite the early exit from the Wurth 400, Hamlin's career remains lucrative, with a reported net worth of $65 million at the end of 2024, bolstered by sponsorships and multiple top-10 finishes in the season.
Teddy Ricketson, a digital content producer for The Sporting News, reported on the incident and highlighted Hamlin's polarizing reputation and competitive standing in the NASCAR series.

Denny Hamlin fire
Hamlin was running well before he got knocked out of the Wurth 400. He had started in eighth place after qualifying and had risen to a top five spot. After a caution, he chose not to pit. He said that he heard something pop, but didn't know if it was his car or someone else's. It turns out it was likely his after his car caught fire.

The flames shot out the sides like he was hitting the turbo button in an old school racing video game. When he finally came to a stop, smoke was pouring out of the car. Hamlin wasn't injured and was able to get out of the vehicle safely, but he was forced to withdraw before the end of the first stage.
Denny Hamlin taunts Texas fans
Hamlin is already a pretty polarizing driver. He is a track veteran and doesn't take kindly to aggressive drivers, while being aggressive himself. Despite not going to the University of Oklahoma, or any college for that matter, Hamlin decided to get under the local Texas fans' collective skin during his intro.
While walking out during his driver introduction, he threw the 'Horns Down' to the crowd. The University of Texas is known for extending their pointer and pinky fingers, while curling the others to resemble a set of bull horns. This is to support the school's athletic programs as the Longhorns. Their rivals, namely Oklahoma, have turned the horns upside down as a dig at Texas.
