What is a Chanticleer?
A chanticleer, pronounced SHON-ti-clear, is another name for rooster, as the word is typically used in medieval fables. Coastal Carolina's website says the mascot comes from "The Nun's Priest's Tale" in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and it's described as a "proud and fierce rooster."
Besides Chanticleer, Coastal Carolina is also referred to as "The Chants" for short.

Coastal Carolina's mascot is Chauncey the Chanticleer, who has green feathers and a stern scowl. He frequently appears at most of Coastal Carolina's football and basketball games but has been very prevalent at their baseball games lately.

Coastal Carolina also has had a live rooster at select games since 2011 named Maddox, who typically spends time on the sidelines of football games.

Coastal Carolina mascot history
In 1954, Coastal Carolina was established and went with "Trojans" as its nickname, but that changed in the 1960s. That was when Cal Maddox, a basketball coach and English teacher at the university, led a group of students that wanted to change the name to closer match the South Carolina Gamecocks, as Coastal Carolina was part of the University of South Carolina network.
Coastal Carolina adopted a live rooster as mascot Maddox in 2011, and the school named it after Cal Maddox, who passed away in 2014.
