Wizards' Khris Middleton gets big $33 million contract update that squashes one Giannis rumor

Khris Middleton couldn't turn this down.

The 34-year old wing had a player option with the Washington Wizards worth $33,345,679. That's a lot of money for an aging forward with injury issues.

So on Monday, Middleton opted-in to his player option, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Middleton was traded to the Wizards midseason this past winter to help the Bucks acquire Bobby Portis.

They deemed him expendable despite his once-massive role in helping Milwaukee win the 2021 NBA title.

After the Wizards acquired him, played in 14 games. He put up 10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 22 minutes per game while struggling mightily from 3-point range (27.7%).

Middleton can still be an effective player, but his ceiling is limited, especially by his injuries.

It makes perfect sense for him to secure this one final great payday.

For the Wizards, it's tricky. Middleton might be a logical trade candidate for a Washington team that is still rebuilding, but a $33 million contract for an aging, injury-prone player wouldn't be the easiest to move.

Maybe the Wizards just decide to let Middleton mentor their younger guys and try to let his championship experience rub off on the next generation.

Since his contract is expiring after the season, though, Middleton could do that and then still be moved at the trade deadline.

It doesn't seem like he can reunite with Giannis Antetokounmpo immediately, but maybe the deadline will provide the perfect opportunity.
