Yankees predicted to lose Eugenio Suárez trade sweepstakes to surprise NL team
Is Eugenio Suárez the perfect New York Yankees trade target at this year's deadline?
The Yankees have an obvious fit at third base if they move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base, and Suárez, who has 25 home runs this season, might be the top third base slugger in the sport right now. But there are a couple of obvious roadblocks impeding their path.
First, there's the matter of whether or not Suárez will actually be traded. His Arizona Diamondbacks set out to contend this season and at 41-39, they're only three games out of playoff position.
Then, the Yankees would also have to compete with other teams in the trade market. And one baseball writer sees a surprise National League team outbidding New York for the 33-year-old slugger.
On Friday, Sports Illustrated's Nick Selbe named the Yankees as a possible fit for Suárez at the deadline, but predicted he would land with the Milwaukee Brewers, who currently have ex-Yankees farmhand Caleb Durbin starting most of their games at the hot corner.
"D-Backs GM Mike Hazen has thus far indicated an unwillingness to sell, but top prospect Jordan Lawlar is waiting in the wings, Suárez is a pending free agent and Arizona may not have the pitching to keep up in the playoff race following season-ending injuries to ace Corbin Burnes and closers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk," Selbe wrote.

"Prediction: Traded to Brewers."
Suárez will still be owed roughly $5 million at the time of the deadline, but he's a rental, so a medium-market team like Milwaukee would probably be more willing to roll the dice there than on someone like Ryan McMahon, who is under contract through 2027.
The bottom line is that if the Yankees want Suárez, they're going to have to get uncomfortable. Their farm system isn't in a great place right now, but they'd have to decimate it a lot more to bring in such a potent slugger.
