Yankees turned catching prospect into a pitcher, and he already throws 100 mph
The New York Yankees chose to turn one of their catching prospects into a pitcher.
He's already throwing 100 miles per hour.
The Athletic's Brendan Kuty detailed the new development in a story on Friday. The prospect's name: Antonio Gomez.
Gomez was a 23-year old catcher at Double-A, but now he's on a developmental track, throwing bullpens and hoping to get into games soon enough.
When he hit 100 on a radar gun in a bullpen session, it was a big deal.
“Really good arm,” Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake told The Athletic. “Really good athlete. I think what the guys are excited about is the potential upside for a guy like that, who’s got some arm strength and has shown it behind the plate. To have the aptitude back there and then try it out on the mound.”

This season at Double-A Somerset, Gomez was hitting .140, so they made the switch.
Now he'll hope to hold opponents to a low batting average while showing off arm strength that was always one of his best traits, even as a catcher.
